Drugs, alcohol & sex: Students make merry

ASU undertakes ‘Cleanse Kohima’

Kohima | September 5

For a section of the students community it was a day to honor their teachers while for others it turned out to be a day to throw away their books, invade the booze joints, freak, get drunk and create trouble.

A series of raids conducted today by the Angami Students’ Union (ASU) in various pockets of the town including several colonies notorious for their booze joints, revealed that students, mostly of high school, including both teenage and minor boys and girls, actually look forward to Teachers’ Day. Not for participation in the celebrations – but to have outings and picnics during which they indulge in all sorts of vices.

The ASU’s raids were conducted following the recent notification issued by union that it would be conducting regular raids on booze joints and other places frequented by party-goers to discourage such activities by students.

Dozens of students in school uniform, which also included a good number of minors of both sexes, were apprehended during today’s raids by the ASU leaders and volunteers and handed over to the school authorities and parents after being severely cautioned. The raid at the Kohima War Cemetery alone saw dozens of school children being apprehended for drinking, using banned drugs and even immoral conduct. A large quantity of assorted alcohol and other intoxicants, including even the chemical-laced correcting fluid, cough syrups and condoms were seized from their possession.

Apart from the raids conducted in the various pockets of the town, a handful of students in school uniform openly drinking in the streets were also apprehended and later released after strict warning.

The ASU had earlier also warned booze joints that the owners of the joints would be held equally responsible if students in uniform are caught drinking in their joints. As part of its continued effort to preserve the image of Kohima as the “Mirror of Nagaland,” the influential students’ organization is presently going all out to make efforts to cleanse the state capital of all kinds of social evils.

As part of these efforts, its leaders and volunteers apprehended some 14 commercial sex workers on Thursday and Friday alone from different parts of the town basing on complaints from residents. While three were apprehended on Thursday night, another eleven were reportedly apprehended Friday night. Interestingly, according to ASU leaders, most of the apprehended girls had notorious reputations as street hookers and were suspected to have infections of sexual diseases. All were handed over to police by the ASU, the officials said. The ‘Cleanse Kohima’ campaign of the ASU is likely to continue for some more time.
