The Department of Youth Resources and Sports (DYRS), Nagaland, organised Athletics Meet 2026 at the Indira Gandhi Stadium here on Wednesday as part of activities commemorating National Sports Day.
As many as 183 students from Christ King Higher Secondary School, Don Bosco Higher Secondary School, Mezhiir Higher Secondary School, Mount Hermon Higher Secondary School, Northfield School, Vineyard School, G. Rio School and Khedi Baptist Higher Secondary School participated in the meet.
Additional Director, DYRS, Jakedovo Chase highlighted the significance of National Sports Day, which is observed on August 29 every year to mark the birth anniversary of hockey legend Major Dhyan Chand.
Chase said the day is observed to honour Dhyan Chand and promote the importance of sports in the country. Dhyan Chand won Olympic gold medals for India in 1928, 1932 and 1936.
Joint Director, DYRS, Khriehuotuo Tsira briefed the participants on the rules and regulations of the meet, while Dr Vilar Solo administered the oath to the participants.
The opening ceremony was chaired by Assistant Director, DYRS, K Libemo Jami, while District Youth Resource and Sports Officer Viruokuo Zumu invoked God’s blessings.
The main National Sports Day programme will be held on August 29, when State Sports Awards will be conferred on achievers from the northeastern level to the international level.
