‘Eastern districts backward due to fund mismanagement’

PUNGRO/KIPHIRE, APRIL 11 (MExN): Parliamentary secretary for Excise, Economics & Statistics and Legal Metrology & Consumer Protection (LMCP), T Torechu, has said the eastern districts of Nagaland continue to remain backward due to improper and non-utilization of development funds meant for the districts.

“We (eastern districts) remain backward because we are not properly utilizing the developmental funds and schemes of the government,” the parliamentary secretary said at the thanksgiving programme organised in honour of his victory in the recently concluded assembly election, at Pungro Town on April 10.

Torechu however said that under the DAN government, the backward districts have made considerable progress in infrastructure development, road connectivity, education, electricity, and health sector in the last ten years.

He also said that DAN III government under the able leadership of Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio would continue to give priority to backward districts and bring more development to every nook and corner of the state.

Thanking party workers, supporters and electorates of 60 Kiphire-Pungro assembly constituency for “reposing” their faith in him and electing him to the assembly for the third consecutive term, Torechu assured that he would continue to work for development of the constituency and peaceful co-existence of the multi-tribe district.

“Your electing me is not for me to rest but to carry out the responsibilities entrusted to me and in this I will gladly bear the burden”, the parliamentary secretary said and sought the cooperation and support of party workers, public leaders, NGOs and churches to fulfill the developmental aspirations of the people.

Torechu also said that for backward districts like Kiphire to come at par with other districts, priority should be given to education, especially education of the girl child.

Meanwhile, at the thanksgiving programme held in Kiphire on April 10, the parliamentary secretary said he would always remember the sacrifices made by his party workers and supporters in ensuring his victory. Torechu also said that since election is over, the people, irrespective of party affiliations, should join hands and work together for common welfare and development.

NPF central general secretary, T Shuya, who accompanied the parliamentary secretary in his address conveyed gratitude to the people of Kiphire district for electing Torechu. Shuya also reminded that since election process is over now, NPF party men and women should reach out to supporters of other political parties and convince them of NPF’s sincere commitment to peace, progress and development.
