Eastern Nagaland: Potential pork hub of State

Dimapur, March 6 (MExN): Highlighting on the need for domestic rearing and supply of pork in Nagaland, which has among the highest number of consumers in the country, Dr Pritpal Kaur Batra, Superintendent of Police, Noklak district stated that Eastern Nagaland has the potential for being a pork supply hub of the state. This was expressed during the valedictory function of the three day training on “Promotion Of Scientific Pig Breeding: Improving Economics And Nutritional Security Of Tribal Farmers Of Noklak district at Indo-Myanmar Border,” where she was the chief guest. 

The training was held from March 2 to 4 at the ICAR Research Complex for NEH Region, Nagaland Centre, Medziphema, for farmers of Noklak district according to a press release from ICAR. During the function, Dr Batra also shared the hardships faced by the farmers of that district and highlighted the need for Naga entrepreneurs to come forward, and provide quality pork supply while lessening the dependence of imports as well. 

In addition to that, she mentioned about the availability of maize for animal feed in Eastern Nagaland which can be converted into pig feed. Dr Batra further extorted the farmers about the “conservation of biodiversity, promoting our own brand and planting trees.”

Previously, Dr Mahak Singh, Scientist, ICAR Nagaland Centre and coordinator of the training, also briefly spoke about the different modules of training imparted to the farmers. It included skills such as, breeding, housing, feeding and disease prevention. In total, 30 farmers from 16 villages of Noklak district participated in the training and were also provided with “100 piglets of improved variety ‘Rani’ along with 6050 kg of grower pig feed and medicines.”
