NEISSR ‘Skill Me Programme’ launched
Chümoukedima, October 3 (MExN): The ‘Skill Me Programme’ at North East Institute of Social Sciences and Research (NEISSR) was launched on October 1.
During the launching function, the NEISSR Principal, Fr Dr CP Anto said, “Today’s system of education, which focuses on academic achievement, needs to be restructured to incorporate life skills that will help youths not just to survive but to thrive in a competitive world.”
He observed that Nagaland being a small state with 19 lakh population and with around 60% youth, “it can easily manage them to employ, if there is proper planning and collaboration with colleges, Government and non-government organisations of the state.” He said that ‘youth need to be re-calibrated and trained to be empowered with employability skills.’ Fr Anto suggested that colleges in the State need to focus to combat the menace of unemployment issues in collaboration with Government and higher education institutions and other employing sectors.
Highlighting on the skills needed in the 21st century, NEISSR Vice Principal, Fr Lawrence Khing emphasized on developing and acquiring ten basic life skill viz., listening skills, effective communication skills, leadership skills, interpersonal skills, relationship management skills, planning and organizational skills, decision making skills, multiple intelligence skills, results orientation mindset, media based skills and competitive skills.
Speaking as the special guest, Rev Sr Pramila Lobo, Director of ACID, mentioned the need for social workers to develop their communication skills as they deal with humans and their problems. “Effective communication skills are vital for social workers who deal constantly with the diverse and complex nature of human beings,” she stated.
NEISSR Assistant Professor, Stephen Gangmeithe and Vincent Anthony Neikha, Councillor at Shalom Rehabilitation Centre were resource persons during the training programme. Stephen Gangmei spoke on organisation communication. Vincent Anthony Neikha highlighted on the communication skills required in rehabilitation centre.
As an action plan, the institute ‘Skill Me Department’ has decided to develop various employability skill on Saturdays to develop holistic development of students of Bachelor of Social Work BSW and Master of Social Work respectively, stated a press release issued by NEISSR Desk.
