The Baptist College Kohima today held its 44th Fresher’s Day at Ura Academy Hall, Kohima under the theme “New Beginning, Endless Possibilities.”

Gracing the occasion as the guest speaker, Kohima Deputy Commissioner B. Henok Buchem said that the Freshers’ Day has opened of a new chapter, a chapter filled with hope, promise and possibilities.

Talking on the theme, he said that “Every beginning has two companions; uncertainty and possibility.”

The uncertainty may seem intimidating, but hidden within it are the countless possibilities waiting to be discovered, he said.

“Today, as you enter college, you are entering a place where education is not confined to textbooks, examinations and degrees. Examination is a lifelong process of becoming. It shapes not only what you know, but also who you become,” he said.

Buchem said that College is where values are tested, convictions are strengthened, talents are redefined and dreams begin to take shape.

He said that to be successful in life, there are certain values which need to be cultivated right from the beginning and “this is the right time to begin.”

Stating that education today is no longer about memorizing facts, he said, “It is about learning how to think critically, analyze carefully, communicate effectively, collaborate respectfully and solve complex problems creatively.”

He said the future belongs not merely to those who possess knowledge, but to those who know how to apply knowledge ethically and compassionately.

Never stop asking questions. Curiosity is the beginning of every discovery, he said.

Stating that character is the greatest qualification, Buchem said “Degrees may open doors, but your character sustains how long those doors remain open. Your integrity, honesty, humility, discipline and compassion will define your reputation far more than your academic scores.”

Asking the students to speak truthfully, respect others, honour commitments and serve selflessly, he said “Remember that success without character is hollow and character with perseverance creates lasting success.”

Asking the students to discover their purpose, Buchem said,” Career changes, technology evolves, jobs disappear, but life and courage and purpose remain meaningful regardless of circumstances.”

“Your education is not merely for personal advancement. It is for the betterment of your family, your community, your state and your nation,” he said.

He also called upon students to make commitments to pursue excellence, not perfection, to value integrity more than popularity, respect every individual regardless of background and use education to serve humanity.

“If you faithfully follow all these commitments, success will naturally follow,” he said.

The DC was accompanied by Dr. Riku Khutso, EAC (Sadar) Kohima.

Earlier, Dr. Kekuchol Pusa, Principal, Baptist College also addressed the gathering.

Speech on behalf of the freshers was delivered by Donensangle while Thrunso K, President, Student Council Baptist College Kohima delivered welcome address.
