Dimapur, June 6 (MExN): June 5 - marked by the United Nations as World Environment Day was commemorated with this year’s theme ‘beat plastic pollution’ in schools and colleges all over Nagaland.
Fazl Ali College: NSS of Fazl Ali College in collaboration with Geography Department and Swach Bharat organised a cleanliness drive in the college campus to mark World Environment Day. Teachers and students made compost pits and collected plastics and garbage around the campus.
Greenwood HSS: Greenwood Higher Secondary School, Kuda Village, Dimapur, observed ‘World Environment Day’ by organizing a cleaning drive and tree plantation in the school premise. The school also conducted a poster competition on the theme ‘Environment.’
Immanuel College: Eco Club of Immanuel College, Dimapur organised a programme to commemorate the World Environment Day with Shumbenthung Odyuo, Asst. Prof as the speaker. It was followed by a cleanliness drive by the Eco Club members of Immanuel College.
J.N Aier College: J.N Aier College in collaboration with the NSS unit observed World Environment Day coinciding with Swachh Bharat on June 5. Kheka Lima, Vice-Principal delivered speech on the theme ‘Beat Plastic Pollution’. Students and faculties also pledged to be responsible citizens to keep the environment safe. A mass social work was conducted in and around Diphupar area and flex and banners were also put up within Diphupar jurisdiction.
Kohima Law College: Kohima Law College observed World Environment Day by conducting social work doing plantation and cleaning up plastic waste in and around the college premises on June 5.
MGM College: MGM College, under the aegis of St. Thomas Mission Society celebrated World Environment Day with poster making, drawing Competition, slogan writing, speech, cleaning drive, plantation etc. B.A 3rd semester students along with Principal and faculty undertook a plantation drive. A workshop cum seminar was also conducted during the morning.
MGM HSS: MGM HSS staff and students during the World Environment Day conducted a special assembly on the theme ‘Beat the plastic pollution.’ Drawing competition, cleanliness drive in the school and Midland colony, plantations were the main highlights. Tajuddin and selected students of high school also participated with DLC members to clean City Tower area. Around 400 higher secondary students took special initiative to clean Sewak Main Gate to Midland colony.
Mount Mary College: NSS Unit of Mount Mary College, Chumukedima initiated the World Environment Day programme in the college on June 5.
Mount Olive College: NSS and RRC units of Mount Olive College observed World Environment Day under the theme ‘Beat Plastic Pollution’ by conducting social work and painting competition. NSS volunteers also performed a short skit on awareness of environmental pollution.
Mount Tiyi College: Eco Club of Mount Tiyi College, Wokha organized a programme to observed World Environment Day. The Eco Club facilitated the undertaking of a pledge by students and faculty members for environmental protection and thinking green. A tree plantation drive was organized at the new College site where students and faculty members planted around 500 tree saplings.
NU Kohima Campus: Nagaland University Students Union (NUSU) organised the World Environment day programme at NU, Kohima Campus Meriema which was graced by Pro-Vice chancellor Prof. R. C. Gupta and the faculties.
NU Lumami: Celebration of World Environment Day at Nagaland University, Lumami a short formal programme held followed by tree plantations and mass social work around the campus. Short speeches were delivered by Prof. A.K. Singh, Vice Chancellor In-charge, Prof. N.S. Jamir, Registrar In-charge, and Prof. S.K. Chaturvedi, Dean, Research, Development and Consultancy. Around 200 trees saplings donated by the office of the Divisional Forest Officer, Mokokchung were also planted.
Phek Govt College: Students and teachers of Phek Government College marching with banners and placards to observe World Environment Day held in collaboration with 22 Assam Rifles, Phek.
Pranab Vidyapith HSS: Pranab Vidyapith Hr. Sec. School, Dimapur celebrated World Environment Day with various activities like paintings and posters exhibition, discussions, plantation, cleaning etc. The students also joined in the cleaning drive organized by Dimapur Municipal Council.
Ram Janaki HSS: During the World Environment Day celebration in Ram Janaki Hr. Sec. School, Dimapur painting and poster design competition were conducted for the junior secondary students. A group of junior students accompanied by their teachers collected plastic and planted saplings in different corners of the school building.
St. Stephen’s HSS: Eco Club of St. Stephen’s Higher Secondary School, Dimapur organised cleanliness drive in the School campus on World Environment Day. Other highlights of the day included drawing, quiz and extempore speech competition.
St Paul School: St Paul School, Phesama celebrated World Environment Day with the theme ‘Beat Plastic Pollution’. Science Club led the day with the school assembly where they presented speech and skit on the ill-effect of plastic. The school also conducted painting and drawing competition.
GMS and GPS Phenshunyu Village: World Environment Day was jointly celebrated by GMS and GPS Phenshunyu Village. The Village Council Chairman spoke on the theme ‘Beat Plastic Pollution.’ The Council distributed six dustbins each to both GPS and GMS. Plantation of trees and collection of plastic waste were carried out in and around the village.
Nazareth School: Nazareth School, Dimapur observed World Environment Day by conducting a series of activities and a cleanliness drive and collected litter at Purana Bazar area. The senior students painted the wall to spread awareness about conservation of environment.
GHSS Chozuba: Government Higher Secondary School, Chozuba, observed World Environment Day where speech was delivered by N Janbemo Humtsoe, while Vesuzo Swuro, Vice Principal, lead the Environmental Pledge. The students undertook a march at Chozuba town carrying placards and shouting slogans against plastic followed by cleanliness drive across Chozuba town. The students also cleaned up the Chozuba Health Center and planted tree saplings in various locations.
Baptist Mission School: The staff and students of Baptist Mission School, Jotsoma observed World Environment Day where the students took part in the cleanliness drive and planted tree saplings provided by the Jotsoma Students Union.
St. Xavier College: World Environment Day was celebrated by staff and students of St. Xavier College, Jalukie. The programme included words of inspiration by NSS President and Principal of the college, song by NCC cadets followed by collection of the plastic waste and planting tree-saplings. Martin Smith, Guest lecturer from Australia took the lead in the programme.
Model Christian College: Model Christian College, Kohima Eco Club organised World Environment Day where Noyingbeni M. Odyuo, Assistant Professor, Department of Zoology, spoke on ‘Plastic Pollution’ while Abigail Sheqi, Assistant Professor, Department of Chemistry highlighted on the effects of climate change in Nagaland. The College also organized a cleanup around the campus.
Zakiesato Memorial HSS: Zakiesato Memorial Hr Sec School observed World Environment Day with the theme ‘Beat Plastic Pollution.’ The students participated in various competitions like sketch, essay writing and extempore.
Yemhi Memorial College: Yemhi Memorial College, Dimapur conducted a mass social work on World Environment Day, which was jointly organised by Eco Club and NSS Unit. Major cleaning of the class rooms, offices and college campus as well as the surrounding areas within Nepali Basti was undertaken under the supervision of the faculty members.
Sakus Mission College: Eco Club of Sakus Mission College observed the World Environment Day. Vice-principal Simon Kelio in his speech, appealed to all faculty and students to come together and combat “Plastic” which is one of the greatest environmental challenges and to spread awareness about plastic pollution. The other highlights included paper bag making competition, dedication of new club members, donation of waste bins and tree saplings to all departments by the Eco Club.
Zisaji Presidency College: Zisaji Presidency College, Kiphire observed World environment Day in its college campus with Col. Virendra Tiwari, CO, 7AR, Kiphire with his wife and team, Neikrho Wezah, Legal Consultant cum Liaison Officer, Directorate of Higher Education as the guest. Volunteers of the College participated in the tree plantation and took pledge of keeping the Zisaji Presidency College Campus green and pollution free.
Vidhya Bhawan School: Vidhya Bhawan School organised a week long programme including signature campaign, which was declared open by L. Kire, Principal Secretary, Forest, Environment and Climate Change on June 2. Other activities were plantation drive, putting up of posters in various colonies covering the entire Kuda Village, cleanliness drive in and around the school campus, extempore speech for class 7 and 8 students and spot painting competition for the senior students.
St John College: To commemorate World Environment, Day Eco Club and NSS, St John College organized cleanliness and plantation drive around the college premises. Convenor Eco Club Moaliba spoke on adoption of trees and recycling of paper. The College also pledged to support adoption of trees.
GHS Mhaikam: Mhaikam Government High School observed World Environment Day with the students and the Village Council with awareness and plantation programmes. The village council accompanied by Kenang, Chairman and Mawangbui, Head GB led the plantation. L Repa Ao, Headmaster and Kengimsaplung respectively highlighted the concept and spoke on the theme ‘Beat Plastic Pollution.’
GMS Trongar ‘A’: Eco Club of Government Middle School Trongar ‘A’ under Tuensang district observed World Environment Day. They conducted poster campaign and cleanliness drive around school premises.
GMS Leshemi: Government Middle School, Leshemi observed World Environment Day with the theme ‘Beat Plastic Pollution. The day was observed by cleaness drive and plantation of plants in and around the school compound and approach road.
CMHSS Pfütsero: Chakhesang Mission Higher Secondary School, Pfütsero observed the World Environment Day at the school auditorium with Medopre Ngachu, PG Teacher CMHSS as the resource person. It was followed by tree plantation.
Zunheboto Govt College: World Environment Day was observed at Zunheboto Government College, jointly organised by NSS unit & Department of Environmental Science. Around 250 tree saplings were planted around college compound with the participation of the faculties and students.
SASRD: On World Environment Day, Eco Club of Nagaland University, SASRD Campus, Medziphema carried out a cleanliness drive around the premises of the campus. In order facilitate proper disposal the Medziphema Municipal Council offered their services to collect the garbage from the campus collection point.
Cistus School: Cistus School, Wokha celebrated World Environment Day with numerous activities in the school campus. Students were taught to make paper bags and a debate was conducted while the junior students participated in sapling plantation event organised by the 28 Assam Rifles.
SMC Nerhe-Phezha: School Management Committee Nerhe-Phezha on World Environment Day conducted a ‘Flower Plantation Drive’ at GPS Nerhe-Phezha with participations of students, teachers, SMC, VCC and Village community.
State Sports Girls hostellers: On occasion of World Environment Day, the State Sports Girls hostellers along with the coaches and regular visitors cleaned Government Higher Secondary School Nagarjan Dimapur ground and also put up banners to create awareness on clean environment in the Government Higher Secondary School Nagarjan ground areas.
Eastern Christian College: Eastern Christian College, Dimapur NSS unit in collaboration with Eco club observed World Environment Day within the campus by organising plantation and cleanliness drive. Around 60 tree saplings were planted.
CSHSS Changtongya: Christian Standard Higher Secondary School Changtongya Town observed and celebrated the World Environment Day at the School Multi-Purpose Hall organised by the school Eco Club. Student from all the class participated in different competition like painting, paper bag making, container painting and essay writing based on the theme ‘Beat Plastic Pollution.
CWWS-NEIDA: Chakhesang Women Welfare Society observed World Environment Day in Phek District in collaboration with farmers and schools, supported by North East Initiative Development Agency—An Initiative of TATA TRUSTS. CWWS and NEIDA during joint Sustainable Forest Conservation Awareness drive which started on May 15 conducted Focused Group Discussion with the community people, conducted Google mapping of Forest Conserved Areas and also organized Educational Event on Sustainable Forest Conservation with schools students in Porba, Pholami, Enhulumi and Thetsumi village. The respective village councils, taking cue from the awareness drive, initiated tree plantation activity and planted over 3005 tree saplings on June 5. In commemoration of the World Environment Day CWWS staff also planted Yew trees in Mini Tourist Lodge premises, Pfutsero.
Northfield School: World Environment Day was observed at Northfield School, Khikha, Kohima rganised by Nagaland Climate Studies and Knowledge Solutions Centre- Nagaland State Climate Change Cell (NSCCC), Nagaland Science and Technology Council NASTEC, Department of Science and Technology.
A total of seven schools participated in the event. NSCCC team conducted a number of interactive participatory activities on climate change and the environment.
A brief theory and demonstration on tree propagation was also given to the participants where they were urged to take a pledge to plant a tree every year on their birthday. A short documentary on plastic pollution was screened.
The programme concluded with a quiz competition based on the activities conducted and general environmental awareness. G. Rio Hr. Sec School was declared the winners whereas Northfield School and Bethel Hr.Sec School bagged the second and the third prize respectively.
The programme ended with the participants signing the “4 R’s Pledge: Refuse, Reduce, Re-use, Recycle”.
