The ‘Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam 2025’ initiative was observed in Zunheboto by My Bharat Zunheboto in collaboration with the District Forest Office and Step by Step School. The event was held in the school premises on July 15.

Delivering the welcome address, Zakato L Zhimomi, Programme Officer of My Bharat Zunheboto, highlighted various programmes and activities undertaken by the organization across the district. He noted that some of these initiatives have even represented Nagaland at the national level.

Zhimomi elaborated on the Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam initiative, which was launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2024 at Buddha Jayanti Park in New Delhi. The first phase of the campaign aimed to plant 80 crore saplings between July 5 and September 30 under the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change. He emphasized that 70–80% of the saplings planted were essential species, currently under care and showing signs of healthy growth.

“This second phase — Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam 2.0 — is not just about planting saplings,” he said. “It’s about showcasing simplicity, success, and the role students can play in making a meaningful impact on society. What matters most is not just planting trees, but nurturing them with care and love.”

Highlighting the region’s proactive engagement with youth development, Zhimomi also shared how the community organizes a series of sports events each year during December, January, and February. These competitions begin at the village level, progress to block and district levels, and culminate at the state level. Such platforms have allowed youth, particularly from Zunheboto, to showcase their talents and earn recognition. These grassroots efforts have brought pride to families and garnered appreciation.

Zhekugha Assumi, Proprietor of Step by Step School, also addressed the gathering. In his speech, he underscored the importance of environmental awareness and planting trees. “These are values we must carry with us every day,” he said. “Our students will look back and be thankful for these actions in the future.”

He added, “While initiatives like these may not always receive national attention, they hold deep meaning for us locally. We are proud of our children, who are bringing honor to their communities and growing into responsible citizens.”

Beyond sports and academics, the community is cultivating a profound respect for nature and environmental sustainability. Discussions on Climate change, carbon sequestration, and the importance of trees are increasingly becoming central themes in both classrooms and community forums.

dents learn in science classes, trees absorb carbon dioxide through photosynthesis and release oxygen, a vital process in maintaining clean air. Amid growing concerns over air pollution in urban areas, which often lead to school closures and health crises, residents  consider themselves fortunate to breathe clean air thanks to their green surroundings.

“Just look at the cities, pollution forces schools to shut down. But here, we breathe clean air because of the trees around us. Isn’t that wonderful?” said Assumi.

“Like our mothers, trees silently endure and give back. Even when we are rough with them, they don’t stop blooming,”  “We complain to our mothers the most, yet they love us unconditionally — just like trees do.”

The school campus stands as a testament to this philosophy. The vibrant greenery, blooming flowers, and peaceful atmosphere reflect the students’ efforts and environmental commitment. Visitors often admire not only the natural beauty of the campus but also the pride students take in maintaining it, Assumi Concluded.

The programme was chaired by Akalu Shohe, a special performance was presented by the Junior Choir of Step by Step School, followed by a plantation drive on the school grounds.
