With the Nagaland Legislative Assembly elections scheduled tentatively in February 2023, battle lines are already being drawn among supporters. Mokokchung has already reported one such occurrence, with a violent outcome. According to ground reports, a clash allegedly occurred between supporters of two opposing camps in Khar village, which falls in the 29 Jangpetkong Assembly Constituency, on December 28.

The confrontation was reportedly between the supporters of two intending ‘consensus’ candidates from the village. A video clip, purported to be of the confrontation was also uploaded on social media. As per the reports, firearms were also used, and one person wounded, which however, was still to be officially confirmed.

Attempt made by The Morung Express to contact the Mokokchung Deputy Commissioner and the Superintendent of Police for official comment was unsuccessful with none of the two officials responding to calls.

Other sources said that NAP (IR) unit stationed at the nearby Mangkolemba sub-divisional headquarters was rushed to restore order in the village.
