Students in Zunheboto urged to widen job aspirations

The Zunheboto Range Students’ Union (ZRSU), in collaboration with St. Joseph University (SJU), Chümoukedima, organised a career guidance programme on April 23 at the Multi Purpose Hall, Zunheboto. During the programme, the students were encouraged to think of employment beyond the government sector. 

Addressing the gathering, ZRSU President Kitolu Kibami highlighted that proper career guidance can make a significant difference in one’s life. He stressed that the journey of life is challenging and that the decisions individuals make regarding their careers are among the most important.

Resource person Heli, Assistant Professor, Department of Political Science, SJU, emphasised that a career is not limited to government jobs through NPSC and UPSC competitive examinations. She pointed out that there are numerous opportunities beyond these exams, particularly through the study of political science.

Dr. Kikoleho Richa, Assistant Professor, Department of Biotechnology, SJU, echoed similar views, stating that career options extend far beyond UPSC and NPSC. She highlighted the wide range of opportunities available outside government employment.

She further noted that the unemployment rate in Nagaland remains high due to a lack of entrepreneurship and skills. She encouraged students to explore courses offered under the Nagaland Skill Development and Entrepreneurship Mission, which are provided free of cost by the government. She also urged students to visit the official websites of Startup Nagaland and Startup India for more information.

Khekato Sumi, Assistant Professor, Department of History, SJU, stressed that a career should be chosen based on one’s skills and dedication. Quoting, “Don’t go where the wind blows,” he remarked that individuals possess different abilities and mindsets, and therefore must choose their paths wisely. He also encouraged students not to hesitate in asking questions, as it can help clarify doubts for themselves and others. “First understand your skills and abilities, and then choose your career accordingly,” he concluded.

Earlier in the programme, Tokito Yeptho, Vice President, ZRSU, chaired the event, while the invocation was delivered by Zato H, Vice President, ZRSU. A special number was presented by Zaka. The vote of thanks was delivered by Tonoka Zhimomi, General Secretary, ZRSU, followed by the benediction by Likithe Yeptho, Women Coordinator, ZRSU.
