Dimapur, September 4 (MExN): In what can be termed as a means of empowering the womenfolk in the society, Deputy Commissioner of Dimapur, Maongwati Aier today inaugurated the Khadi Production Unit at Amaluma village under Dhansiripar Block which would be operated by twenty trained women ‘artisans’ of the village.
The Khadi Production Unit is being implemented by Nagaland Khadi & Village Industries Sangh at the Amaluma village under the ‘SFURTI’ programme which is sponsored by KVIC (Khadi and Village Industries Commission).
Speaking at the inaugural programme, the deputy commissioner, Maongwati Aier expressed hope that the Khadi Production Unit would improve the economic condition of the villagers. He said that the setting up of the production unit is not only for today but also for the future since it would help in generating income for the villagers.
Saying that Khadi means employment to all, Aier enlightened the people that 45 percent of exported items from India comes from small, micro and medium industries. In this regard, he encouraged the villagers to make the best use of the production unit since Nagaland does not have big industries. The DC also handed over the keys of the production unit to the women artisans and also visited the Bal Vijay Sewa Kendra at Dhansiripar and interacted with the SFURTI artisans.
A villager leader of Amaluma village, Minsit Jidung commented, after the programme, that the production unit would generate a minimum of Rs 2000 for the artisans. Expressing happiness over the setting up of the production unit, Jidung disclosed that the villagers earlier used to adopt the traditional method of spinning Khadi, however with the production unit in place, the production would be doubled which would bring more income to the villagers.
Runubala Langthasa, a trained artisan who would be working in the production unit, expressed happiness that the womenfolk of the village have now found some means of earnings to run their families. Earlier, the womenfolk used to sit at home and look after the children and cook only, she said. However with the help of the KVIC and the Nagaland Khadi & Village Sangh, twenty village women could go for one month training and got employment in the Khadi Production Unit.
