Encroachers evicted from civilian area

Dimapur, May 22 (MExN): The Dimapur district administration today evicted residents and demolished more than eighty houses at army supply colony in Dimapur for alleged encroachment of civilian area. The houses located outside the boundary walls of the 50- company cantonment area near the Sewak gate were given eviction orders several times by the district administration, with the last date set on May 16. However, the eviction was carried out due to non-compliance of the Deputy Commissioner’s order.

The eviction drive which started around 8 am on Thursday was objected to by the Army officials, it is reported. However, according to the district administration officials, the land belongs to indigenous Naga civilians as was re-established by the land survey and record officers who visited the site on Wednesday. The encroached land reportedly covers about twenty bhigas of land. Interestingly, most of the residents are employees at the Army CSD canteen and 50 Coy AC which gave further reasons for the district administration to believe that the residents are being harbored by the Army. Many of those people whose houses were broken down were seen making their way into the Army compound.

Several land owner holding original land record papers (patta) in the colony also rushed to the spot. Some of the land patta holders say that they were not given eviction orders and were neither informed by the occupants about any notice whatsoever. Some residents confirmed that they received notice but didn’t pay heed because they were living in the colony for over 35 years and no body has ever objected to it. The district administration, however, say that those people holding genuine pattas will be verified and their land will remain untouched. The day long eviction drive was carried out in the presence of Dimapur sub-divisional officer (civil), Revenue Officer, Extra Assistant Commissioner, DBs and assisted by Dimapur police personnel.
