‘Enforce minimum wages’

Dimapur, September 11 (MExN): Welfare and productive mechanisms of various labour laws should be effectively enforced to increase productivity, Parliamentary Secretary Saku Aier has said. Supporting his contention, the MLA added that the minimum wages law should not only be published but also enforced.

The parliamentary secretary was addressing a joint sitting of the Labour & Employment department officers and staff on September 7 at the directorate of Employment & Craftsmen Training in Kohima. He pointed out the importance of educating the people for utilising  legal provisions available with the Labour Court and Industrial Tribunal constituted under the Industrial Disputes Act, 1947.

Aier also encouraged the Labour & Employment department to try its best to generate government revenue, while stating that clear and explicit trades in the ITI should be indicated  in publishing advertisements, but not in abbreviated form, and should also be given at least one month’s notice.

Innovative schemes such as opening wayside workshops near national highways and deployment of ITI pass-out mechanics may be some of the rejuvenating schemes for mechanics, he said. This may be looked into  by the department, he suggested. For this, Aier urged the department to give serious thought and prepare feasibility reports in the form of DPRs. The parliamentary secretary also said there is a tendency of some candidates to abstain from continuing the training. In order to check this, Aier suggested that security deposits, which are refundable be increased and in case of defaulters, their security deposits forfeited.

The brief function was chaired by R B Thong, IAS, Commissioner and Secretary for Labour & Employment. While delivering the vote of thanks, N Panger Jamir, Director for Labour & Employment, assured the parliamentary secretary that the department would endeavour to extend its full cooperation in fulfilling his suggestions.
