The Eastern Naga Students Federation (ENSF) today conducted its first phase of its agitation at Kiphire with the expiry of the date of ultimatum served to the government. The six tribes of Eastern Nagaland had demanded for allocation of 25% job reservation and as per the plan of action formulated by the federation, it carried out the first form of agitation in the form of silent procession.
Hundreds of students from various institutions participated in the procession and a short program was conducted at the police point where a large number of people gathered in support of the demand. The students, along with their leaders marched towards the Deputy Commissioner Kiphire’s office with placard asking him to pass on their grievances to his higher-ups.
T Likhumse Sangtam, Joint Secretary ENSF gave a brief highlight on the purpose of the agitation. Leaders of different organization express their support to the agitation initiated by the ENSF. The ENSF however clarified that it is not against any tribe, but that they were fighting against the government for their legal right. They ENSF further stated that they would go on with their proposed agitation till their demand was met by the government.
In tune with its Eastern Nagaland counterparts, the silent procession was also implemented in the Federation Headquarter at Tuensang. Students numbering to about 7000 is reported to have participated in the agitation which culminated in a function where L Shahoto Yimchunger, Vice President ENSF chaired the function.
The others who spoke at the function were A Chingmak, Vice President ENPO, T Mongko President CCSU and Y P Chillio, President ENSF. The press communiqué issued by the Assembly Secretary Lamthio Khiamiungan stated that the silent procession and the poster campaign was successfully conducted in all the unit headquarters and the ENSF conveyed their gratitude to all the district administration, schools and tribal councils for their cooperation in the first phase of the agitation.
