Rearing of poultry birds is an integral part of rural mass in Longleng district. Majority of the farmer rear only indigenous poultry birds due to non-availability of improved varieties of chicks in the market. Longleng district enjoys monsoon type of climate with a minimum temperature of 10° C in winter and a maximum of 28° C in summer. The weather is well suited for rearing improved varieties of poultry birds in the district. Taking into consideration the potential of poultry rearing in Longleng district, KVK selected Mrs. Umto Phom, a farmer from Auching village for sustainable livelihood through backyard poultry production. Critical inputs like 100 numbers of Day old chicks, feeder, drinker, antibiotic powder, liquid vitamin supplements were provided. The chicks were vaccinated as per schedule. The overall survivability percentage was 95 per cent up to 20th weeks. The average body weight at 4th weeks was recorded as 368±0.058 g per bird that increased up to 2.485± 0.440 g at 20th weeks. The poultry birds were allowed to scavenge during the day time from 8th weeks onward. The poultry birds were reared up to 32 weeks only. Commercial ration were given with additional supplementation of feeds like maize, paddy grains and green leafy vegetables. The income was mainly from the sale of live birds and egg at the rate of Rs.300 per kg and Rs. 10 per piece respectively. The net return from the sale of culled live birds and eggs is Rs.46080 with BC ratio of 2.18.
MARKETING: The culled birds and eggs were sold within the village and in local market.
IMPACT/HORIZONTAL SPREAD OF TECHNOLOGY: The meat and egg of Vanaraja bird were highly accepted by the public and her success has motivated the fellow villagers especially the women folk to rear poultry as a means of entrepreneurship development and income generation.
