Evil Shall Slay the Wicked: A eflection on God's Justice amid Global Suffering

“Evil shall slay the wicked, and those who hate the righteous shall be condemned.” Psalm 34:21 (NKJV). This verse from the book of Psalms speaks of a profound truth: the wicked will ultimately be undone by their own evil. Their destructive plans and cruel actions will turn against them. Wickedness carries the seeds of its own destruction. This is both a warning and a reassurance, a declaration of divine justice and natural consequence.

Where Is Justice? Often, we look at the world and wonder: Why do those who commit great evil seem to succeed? Why do the powerful, who plot violence and war to occupy land or dominate others, rise in power while the innocent suffer? We see wicked rulers and violent groups oppressing the weak, killing the innocent, and enjoying the fruits of their evil schemes. Meanwhile, those who walk in the footsteps of our Lord Jesus Christ, those who show compassion, help the poor, care for the sick, and promote peace, are attacked and persecuted. Their suffering cries out for justice. Sometimes, even the faithful begin to question God. "Why do the evil prosper while the good suffer?” "Where is justice?"

Justice may be delayed, but it is never denied: We often say, “Justice delayed is justice denied.” Yet God’s justice, though it may seem delayed in human eyes, is always sure. God sees. God knows. And in His perfect timing, He will act. Consider the conflicts in our world today: The war between Russia and Ukraine, the brutal oppression in Myanmar to the pro-democracy fighters, the violence between Israel and Hamas, the ethnic conflict in Manipur, India. You and I may have our own opinions on these matters. But above all, we must remember that God sees beyond human sides. He sees the hearts, the truth, the lies, and the pain. One day, the evil that drives war and hatred will face its reckoning. The wicked who devise plans to kill, oppress, and conquer will fall not necessarily by direct divine intervention, but often through the consequences of their own evil, or by the hand of others whom God uses as instruments of justice.

God’s Promise: Evil will not prevail. The evil planner may enjoy temporary power. He may gain lands, wealth, respect, and influence. He may believe that his power will pass to future generations. But Scripture assures us: evil will not last. “Do not take revenge, my dear friends, but leave room for God’s wrath, for it is written: ‘It is mine to avenge; I will repay,’ says the Lord.” (Romans 12:19 NIV). We live in a world where injustice is real and suffering is great. The powerful build castles from oppression and violence. They glorify their strength and believe they will be powerful forever. But God, the righteous Judge, will not be mocked. The day of justice will come. As Psalm 21:11 says, “Though they plot evil against you and devise wicked schemes, they cannot succeed.”

We must not give up hope; instead, we must continue to trust, pray, and persevere. As wars rage on and the innocent continue to suffer, millions cry out to God. Their prayers rise for justice, for mercy, and for the defeat of evil. “I sought the Lord, and He heard me, and delivered me from all my fears.” (Psalm 34:4). God is loving, caring, and always near to the oppressed. He is a God of justice, and though justice may be slow in coming, it is sure. Evil will not prevail forever. The Apostle Paul reminds us in Romans 12:21: “Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.” And Jesus Himself declared in Matthew 16:18: “...the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.” Let us hold tightly to these promises. Let us not be discouraged by the success of the wicked, nor silenced by fear. Instead, let us continue to live by faith, to speak truth, to show love, and to pray fervently for justice.

Let us all stand firm in hope. As our theme says, “Evil shall slay the wicked.” Let us not lose hope. Let us not give in to despair. Let us not be passive, but patient, knowing that the battle belongs to the Lord. Let us fight the good fight and not with hatred or revenge, but with righteousness, truth, and prayer. In the end, truth will triumph, evil will fall, and God’s justice will prevail. Amen!
