Guwahati, January 18 (MExN): Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday virtually flagged off two new Amrit Bharat Express trains from Assam, marking the introduction of the first non-AC Amrit Bharat services from the Northeast region.
The newly launched services are the Dibrugarh-Gomti Nagar (Lucknow) Amrit Bharat Express and the Kamakhya-Rohtak Amrit Bharat Express.
The virtual flag-off ceremony was conducted from Kaliabor in Assam. The event was attended by Assam Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, Union Minister of Ports, Shipping and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal, and Union Minister of State for External Affairs and Textiles Pabitra Margherita.
At Kamakhya, Assam Cabinet Minister Chandra Mohan Patowary and Lok Sabha MP Bijuli Kalita Medhi were present, while in Dibrugarh, the event saw the presence of state Cabinet Minister Prasanta Phukan and Rajya Sabha MP Rameswar Teli, among others.
According to the Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR), these trains are designed to significantly enhance long-distance rail connectivity between Assam and key destinations in Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, West Bengal, Haryana, and adjoining regions.
The railways stated that the services are expected to directly benefit lakhs of passengers, including students, traders, working professionals, and families from the Northeast.
The Dibrugarh-Gomti Nagar service will improve access from Upper Assam to major educational, medical, and commercial centres in North India. The Kamakhya-Rohtak train will strengthen connectivity from Guwahati to important industrial and administrative hubs in Haryana and the National Capital Region (NCR).
