Exempt government teachers from civic polls duty: ZLSU

Peren, May 29 (MExN): The Zeliang Students’ Union (ZLSU) Nagaland has urged the Deputy Commissioner and District Election Officer of Peren (DC&DEO) to exempt government teachers from being assigned as polling officials for the upcoming civic elections in Nagaland.

In the appeal letter to the DC&DEO, the ZLSU expressed serious concern that students' careers and the normal functioning of schools would be affected once again if teachers deputed are as polling officials in the upcoming urban local bodies (ULB) elections.

Government schools were forced to remain closed due to the deputation of teachers on election duty in the recently concluded Lok Sabha polls for the Nagaland Parliamentary constituency on April 19, it noted.

The ZLSU further pointed out that there are around eighty departments in the State Government. These departments could be assigned the poll duties other than the education department, as the upcoming ULB elections only cover urban areas, it contended.

Accordingly, the letter from ZLSU President Kingsalt Hegwang and General Secretary Sanlak Namdau to the DC&DEO sought exemption of teachers from civic polls for the welfare of the students' community.
