NEISSR MSW students undertake rural camp to Tening village
Peren, February 11 (MExN): With a purpose to explore rural life and scope for social work intervention, a team of students undertook a rural camp at Tening village, Peren District.
Altogether 48 Master of Social Work (MSW) first year trainees of North East Institute of Social Science & Research (NEISSR), Dimapur along with the NEISSR Administrator cum Vice Principal, Fr. John Poji and two faculty members Amit Das (Asst. Prof.), and Sungjemtola Jamir (Asst, Prof.) went on the camp from January 30 to February 9.
The trainees spend initial three days for Participatory Rural Appraisal (PRA) with guidance of Lanthou Mark Gonmei, facilitator from AIDA, stated a press release received here. Through the PRA, the trainees were able to make various mappings with the help of the villagers and through door to door home visit, the trainees gained knowledge about socio-economic status and the most existing problems which includes drinking water facility followed by tele-communication, electricity, road communication, and other socioeconomic problems. In the following days, the trainees carried out sports week with the village youths and children to promote better health.
The trainees were also invited by Captain D. Bakshi and Asst Commander R. Kanwar of 36 BN Assam Rifles, Tening village for a friendly volley and basketball match. Apart from that, the trainees also carried out awareness programs on tobacco, unemployment, birth control, alcoholism, importance of organic farming and school social work intervention. The trainees also rendered voluntary service by distributing basic medicines and commodities to the poor villagers.
February 8 was marked as cultural cum thanks giving day where more than 75 villagers were present along with the 36 BN Assam Rifles Captain, Asst. Commander of Assam Rifles, Village Chairman, Village GB’s, and members of Village Women Association. Both the Captains of 36 BN Assam Rifles mentioned the free education scheme for poor villagers from class 6 to 12.
The Village Council Chairman, Namkiabui acknowledged the NEISSR MSW students for their community development approach and activities.
The trainees could successfully carry out the rural camp with the participation of the village leaders and the community people.
