Exposure trip for Dimapur farmers organized

ATMA, Dimapur members on an exposure trip to Mokokchung.

Dimapur, May 5 (MExN): In an effort to expose farmers from Dimapur district to the agricultural practices, culture and customs of Mokokchung people, ATMA-Dimapur undertook an exposure tour to Mokokchung district from May 1 to 3 for interested farmers, informed DAO & PD (ATMA) Dimapur.
During the three days tour programme, the team visited the State Agricultural Research Station (SARS), Yisemyong where they interacted with officials of the research station and learned about various researches being conducted on paddy, brinjal, cucurbits, tea, etc. A quick visit to the model watershed project was also taken and then, a short visit to the tea gardens of the research station. The research station had a mini tea processing plant.
The team also visited vegetable farms at Longkhum village. The note stated that the trip to the nearest farm in the village was a “gruelling” descent of about 25 minutes on foot. However, on reaching it was rewarding and surprising for the Dimapur farmers as they found that instead of paddy crops, tomato, cabbage and other vegetables had been cultivated on the slope of the hills. “As compared to the treacherous hilly terrain of Longkhum village, Dimapur is blessed with even topography and easily accessible by vehicle or foot,” the press release stated. “However, very few local farmers cultivate vegetables in Dimapur and that they could easily achieve good production with minimum effort in Dimapur condition.”
It further stated that a sense of respect also developed within the officials for the farmers for their ingenious effort and endearing hard work in production of vegetables which have made the village self sufficient in terms of vegetable consumption.
Apart from the field visits, the touring group also visited historical and tourist places of Mokokchung district like Impur, Longkhum and Mopungchuket villages. The tour was a successful one in broadening the mindset of the farmers as well as the officials of Dimapur district, it affirmed.
The tour team was led by DAO and Project Director (ATMA), S. Bendangtemsu. Altogether, 24 farmers and officials undertook the exposure tour.
