Extreme weather conditions in NE beginning March 29

DIMAPUR, MARCH 26 (MExN): The Indian Meteorological Department has forecasted an intense wet weather spell over the Northeast region from March 29 to April 1.

A press release from the Met Department informed that widespread rainfall with thunderstorm and lightning at isolated places are very likely over the region during March 29 to April 2 with maximum activity on March 30 and 31.

The weather conditions may cause landslides and inundation of low lying areas during the period, the report informed.

Nagaland along with Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura are expected to receive rainfall at many places with isolated thunderstorm, lightning and gusty winds (30-50 kmph) over the course of the period.

The department meanwhile advised suspension of farming operations for the extreme weather period. “It may cause landslides and inundation of low lying areas at some places over south Assam, Meghalaya, Tripura and Mizoram during March 30-April 1,” the Met department said.

The department cautioned that there may be “damage to plantations, horticulture and standing crops, as well as injury to people and cattle at open places due to the strong winds.”

It meanwhile advised people to keep their windows and doors in their homes and offices closed, stay indoors and avoid travel during the period if possible. Officials have also advised against lying on concrete floors or leaning against concrete walls. It further suggested “unplugging electrical and electronic appliances, getting out of water bodies and keeping away from objects that conduct electricity.”

“The weather events may cause flooding, water logging, low visibility conditions, damage to kutcha roads and other vulnerable structures, localized landslides and mudslides,” the department stated.
