Two large trees toppled to the ground killing two persons and injuring six others during the weekly Wednesday bazaar at Supermarket area. The trees fell following a strong gust of wind which briefly blew across Dimapur. The incident occurred around 3:00-3:20 pm.
All the victims were rushed to the District Hospital Dimapur (DDH). According to officials at the hospital, a total of 8 individuals were admitted wherein one female was pronounced dead on arrival. Four of the victims were later discharged following treatment while three others were admitted at the ICU.
At the time of filing this report, one of the injured persons (male) also succumbed to injuries at the hospital.
As per the PRO, Dimapur Police, the other deceased person was a 38-year-old street vendor who, along with her sister was sitting on the side of the road when the tree plummeted towards them.
Meanwhile, H Tovihoto Ayemi, Advisor, Power Department has expressed shock and sadness over the incident. He offered deep condolences to the family of the deceased and wished speedy recovery of those injured in the incident.
In a condolence message issued through the Media Cell of the Advisor, he said that the unfortunate incident has caused panic among the people. Ayemi also informed that the administration, along with other concerned departments and agencies, will initiate immediate necessary steps to ensure safety of the public and to prevent future occurrence of such incidents in crowded areas.
