Dimapur, August 28 (MExN): ATMA Dimapur, Chümoukedima block established Farm School on Paddy at Virazouma village on August 25.
Delivering a lecture, Dr Tiatula Jamir, BTM elaborated on the concept of Farm School, where she informed that the farm schools are established in each block and for one cropping season alone. She stated that the main function of the farm school is to conduct need based demonstrations and trainings programmes about the technologies in agriculture and allied sectors which are then further popularized among the farming community through these farm schools. She stated that the technology backstopping of these farm schools will be conducted by an expert both at district and state level so as to upgrade their knowledge and skills.
A live demonstration on installation of pheromone traps in the rice field was also conducted, where she explained that the pheromone traps are used in different ways such as monitoring through trap catch, killing through mass catch, mating disruption, thereby breaking the life cycle of the pest and mass destruction of male insect population.
The farmers participated in the demonstration, where the method of fitting the different parts of the structure, insertion of lure (attracticide of female rice yellow stem borer) and erection of trap in the field was satisfactorily demonstrated. She informed the farmers to avoid unnecessary erection of the trap since it may trap beneficial insects.
Ten farmers who are engaged in low land rice cultivation were enrolled as students of the farm school with Kroyieho Kiso as the Teacher farmer. Farm school kits such as neem oil, pheromone traps and insect lure were distributed to all the participants. Knapsack sprayers’ and farm school incentives was also handed over to the teacher farmer.
Earlier, the programme was chaired by Matsungtoshi, ATM and vote of thanks was delivered by Teacher farmer. Altogether 10 farmers and two ATMA functionaries attended the programme.
