Farmers educated on adopting innovative climate resilient agricultural practices 

DIMAPUR, MAY 24 (MExN): A weeklong campaign to commemorate World Environment Day and International Year of Millet under the theme ‘Climate Resilient and Smart Agriculture’ was kicked off today with a seminar programme on May 24. 

Organized by Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Tuensang the objective of the seminar is to raise awareness and educate the farming community in adopting innovative climate resilient agricultural practices to tackle climate change. 

In his inaugural speech, Dr. Pijush Kanti Biswas, Senior Scientist & Head spoke on the pressing need to adapt to the changing climatic conditions and adopt sustainable agricultural practices. 

With erratic rainfall and unpredictable weather conditions, emphasis was laid upon smart agriculture practices to increase crop productivity. He further shed light on cultivation of high yielding varieties of vegetable crops that thrives well under adverse climatic conditions.

During the technical session, experts from different fields shared their insights during the seminar.  K Samuel Sangtam, ACTO (Agronomy) spoke on climate resilient practices in cereal crops. He encouraged the farmers to conserve indigenous potential varieties of cereal, coarse cereal and vegetables varieties. 

Participants were also imparted knowledge about preparation of contingency plan to face any adverse climate situation. Longma Yanger Pongen, ACTO (Agriculture Extension) spoke on extension services vs climate smart agriculture. He emphasized the concept of farmers first and that advancement in agriculture could be achieved only if the farmers become technology smart and ready for economical change. 

A lecture on ‘Role of IPM under adverse climatic conditions’ was delivered by K Michael Pienyu, ACTO (Plant Protection) where he highlighted the different components, principles and concept of IPM to the participants and urged the farmers to adopt them diligently. 

Dr Temjennungsang, ACTO (Veterinary and Animal Husbandry) spoke on ‘Climate resilient practices in animal husbandry’ while emphazing on climate smart technologies for livestock and poultry. 

Audio visual presentation on climate resilient practices was also projected followed by interactive session with the farmers. Altogether, 28 farmers from Kuthur and K. Wongthu villages participated in the programme.
