
Kohima, March 21 (MExN): Kohima ATMA team along with KVK Tesophenyu organised a Farmers Scientist Interaction at Rusoma and Tuophema Village under Kohima district on March 14.
During the interaction, KVK scientist Micheal Pienyü, Plant Pathology and Zhiete, Soil Science suggested the use of Neem oil to control pest and disease outbreak such as leaf curl disease of citrus. It was also learned from the farm school teacher, Lhoutsolie of Touphema village that there are total number of 2000 orange plants in the orchard and bearing of oranges and harvesting have commenced since the 4th years of planting. He also highlighted about the importance of Bordeaux paste to protect the plants from diseases in Orchard farm. The importance of clipping the water sprouts branches to promote healthy growth of the plant and to maximize the bearing capacity of the plants was highlighted along with demonstration and the farmers were encouraged to go for Half Moon terracing in order to control soil erosion.
The team also visited the FIG Medze krotho at Rusoma which was formed in 2016. The FIG consist of 12 members undertaking various crop and vegetable cultivations such as potato, maize, leek, ginger and other seasonal crops. During the interaction the ill-effects of DDT usage was explained in detail. Use of bio fertilizer was encouraged. In regard to the new upcoming government policies the KVK scientists highlighted about gender mainstreaming that focus to promote and improve the women condition in agriculture.
