Fire destroys Manipur oldest running English newspaper office

The office building of Manipur Mail, the oldest publishing English daily in Manipur was reduced to ashes by a devastating fire that also completely destroyed two houses including the residence of the editor of the daily on Tuesday.

The fire reportedly broke out on Tuesday around 3.30 pm in Imphal’s Uripok Ningthoukhongjam Leikai. The houses completely razed by the inferno belonged to N Sanatomba, the editor of Manipur Mail and his brother N Lakpati.

Two other houses in the neighbourhood were also partially damaged by the inferno. The police were yet to ascertain the origin of the fire.

The state fire service pressed into service four fire tenders and its available manpower at Imphal Fire Service station to douse the fire before spreading to the neighbouring houses. 

The office of the newspaper is run from an attached structure of the editor Sanatomba and the inferno had destroyed all the office materials including store room, 10 computer sets and three power generators.

The fire also destroyed two cars, one two-wheeler and other belongings of the two houses.
