If everything goes well, Nagaland will soon have a fishery college.
Nagaland Fisheries & Aquatic Resources Director, Kevisa Kense informed this during the inauguration of the Eco Carp Hatchery at Dzü-ü Valley under Kohima district, about 20 km away from the state capital.
He said that the proposal has already been sent to the Government of India for the college which will be based in Dimapur. He also said that the department had already sent a proposal to set up fish seed bank in the state.
This Eco Carp Hatchery, a project under the CSS of Rashtriya Krishi Vikas Yojana (RKVY), is the first of its kind in Kohima district to meet the requirements of fish production in Kohima and Phek districts.
Kense said that it is time people concentrate and invest their time in fish cultivation. Stating that there is nothing more profitable than fishery under agri and allied sector, Kense observed that the fishery sector will help boost rural economy.
“We have to involve in fish cultivation with the target to make it an economic value,” he said adding that most of the fishery ponds are owned by the rich people and Nagas are yet to see the brighter side of the story when it comes to fishing activity on commercial scale.
Kense also informed that the department has forwarded a proposal of Rs. 130 crore to the ministry for development of fisheries in the State.
Stating that Nagaland has a potential area of around 30,000 hectares for development of fisheries, Kense informed that the department has so far developed around 3000 hectares.
Er. Keviletuo Yiese, retired Chief Engineer, Power urged the department officials to continue rendering their best for promotion and development of fish cultivation in the state. He also advised the beneficiaries to seize the opportunity when they are being assisted by the government.
Fisheries & Aquatic Resources Deputy Director, Neitho-o Kuotsu called for producing quality fish seed. “Fish seed is a pre-requisite activity for fish farming,” he said and called for developing more nurseries.
Kuotsu said the setting up of Eco Carp Hatchery will immensely boost the development and advancement of the fisheries sector in this part of the state.
Ketusielie Angami, Deputy Director, Fisheries and Aquatic Resources hoped that the government will provide more allocation to the department to push forward fishery production in the state.
