Five arrested for endangered species trade

DIMAPUR, APRIL 23 (MExN): Dimapur Police on April 22 arrested five persons who were found involved in the illegal trade of endangered species. The Additional Superintendent of Police/PRO, Dimapur informed that two Gecko reptiles were recovered from their possession. It was also informed that the accused were involved in the illegal trade for quiet sometime and that the endangered reptiles were bought from the Burmese border. 

The accused have been identified as Binod Singh (48), Goura Singh (58), Siandoulian Zou (45), Ajim (58) and Kumarjit Singh (47).

The ASP also stated that the reptiles were bought for a “contact” who had offered to pay Rs 10,00,000 each for the two Geckos. The accused were arrested from a hotel in Dimapur while they were waiting for the “contact” to make the exchange. A case has been registered under the Wildlife Protection Act and under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code. The accused have been remanded to custody while further investigation has been initiated.
