As Nagaland readies to host the 16th National Children Science’s Congress (NCSC), the organizers are excited to usher in the event for which they have been lobbying for the past eight years. The responsibility of organizing the mega event, which will have eminent scientist and former President of India, Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam as the chief guest, the organizers are leaving no stone unturned to make it a a memorable event. With the government giving a go-ahead only a few weeks ago and the programme due to start on December 27 up to December 31, the event will see over 600 students accompanied by their teachers from all states of India, renowned scientists and child scientists. Organizers are hopeful that the event will showcase a completely different face of Nagaland.
Terming it as an opportunity for students in Nagaland to learn and enhance their scientific temperament, the organizers and the state government have taken initiatives to invite 100 students from each district to take part in the programme.
Teachers are also expected to benefit from this programme as there will be free training for them and interactive sessions with scientists as well. With a larger population of Naga students opting for the Humanities, NCSC is being considered the right means to rope in attention to science and allied streams. The year 2008 being observed as international year of planet Earth, the organizers of the NCSC decided to take up the theme for NCSC 2008 to commemorate the international year in a local context. The theme for this year’s NCSC is “Planet Earth- Our Home: Explore, Care and Share.”
NCSC, which is a much anticipated event for students across India, is internationally renowned and this year about 40 students from Asian countries are expected to participate.
Nagaland is the second north east state after Sikkim to host the event, which the organizers expect will go down as a “historic event,” and will forever remain a pride for Nagas. Cultural programmes have also being arranged for visitors coming form outside the state at the end of every evening session. The host for NCSC 2008 is the Nagaland Institute of Health, Environment & Social Welfare, a non-governmental organization and the co-host is Livingstone Foundation Higher Secondary School, Dimapur.
