DIMAPUR, SEPTEMBER 21 (MExN): The Department of Education, Tetso College, in collaboration with Tetso NSS, Tetso Red Ribbon, and BYWC CiTYBARN – The Health Centre, Dimapur, organized an HIV/AIDS Awareness Campaign on the theme “Choose Right, Live Right” at Lorin Hall, Tetso College, on September 19.
The programme aimed to sensitize students and the community about HIV/AIDS prevention, early detection, and the role of education in eradicating stigma associated with the disease. Organizers stressed that awareness is the first step in prevention and urged participants to spread accurate knowledge to dispel myths surrounding HIV/AIDS.
Mhalelhou Albert Yhome, Counsellor, BYWC CiTYBARN, Dimapur, was the resource person. He highlighted key issues including safe practices, counseling support, and the importance of treating HIV/AIDS as a health condition requiring care, understanding, and medical attention. The session also emphasized mental health support for people living with HIV.
The campaign was inaugurated by Y. Theila Phom, Chairperson of B.A. 1st Semester, Education Department, who in her keynote address underlined the vital role of awareness in combating HIV/AIDS and encouraged students to spread correct knowledge.
A highlight of the campaign was a drama enacted by Education Department students, portraying the struggles, stigma, and misconceptions faced by people living with HIV/AIDS. The performance left a strong impression, reinforcing the message that empathy and correct information are crucial to breaking stereotypes.
As part of the initiative, free blood screening was provided, promoting voluntary testing and timely diagnosis. Medical professionals from BYWC CiTYBARN explained that HIV is manageable with proper treatment and support. The campaign received an overwhelming response from students, many of whom voluntarily came forward for testing.
