DIMAPUR, MARCH 15 (MExN): The National Socialist Women’s Organization of Nagalim (NSWON) today entered 25 years of its existence. The inaugural function of the silver jubilee celebrations were conducted at the NSCN (IM) camp of Hebron, around 45 minutes from Dimapur. Chief Guest for the occasion Dr Unice, the first chairperson of the NSWON, while focusing on the need for women to venture out from domestic life corrected traditionalists who “say that women are born for men.” Saying that they have passed through many trials and ordeals as well as ups and downs and dangers, she said they might have also wounded one another’s sentiments through words and actions and also made mistakes. “Nevertheless, let us forgive and forget for it is time for jubilee.”
In her welcome address, YS Salem, present chairperson of the NSWON said that for political reasons “Naga women were molested and even raped, gang raped, detained in various custody, tortured even up to the extent of third degree method, forced to deliver child at open ground of mass concentration camps and many other various forms of human rights violations.” “But the spirit of nationalism of Naga women could not be suppressed by mighty adversaries.”
She quoted the NSCN Yehzabo (Constitution) which says in Part IV, Article 3 clause (h): Women of Nagalim shall enjoy equal rights with men in all spheres of life, politically, economically, culturally and socially.
Top brass of the NSCN (IM) were also present during the occasion. Besides prayers, speeches and songs, a souvenir was also released. A memorial stone was also unveiled.
From their beginning in 1981, NSWON members have been engaged in military operations and other activities. 36 of their members have died in battle.
