Frontline staffs learn about Bear conservation

Dimapur, May 4 (MExN): A capacity building workshop on Bear conservation for frontline staff (Forest Rangers, Deputy Rangers, Foresters and Forest Guards) is jointly organized by IUCN-Bear Specialist Group and Nagaland Forest Department on May 4 and 5 at the Conference Hall, Forest Office Complex, Forest Colony, Dimapur.  

I. Panger Jamir, IFS, Principal Chief Conservator of Forests & Head of Forest Force, Nagaland, in his inaugural address as the chief guest of the programme, laid emphasis on need of systematic study, identification, restoration of bear habitation, education and awareness among children and youth for bear conservation, radio collaring of a bear and releasing it in Intanki National Park for study and research purpose.  

Satya Prakash Tripathi, IFS, Chief Wildlife Warden, Nagaland and Chairman of the programme welcomed the participants and highlighted the distribution of different species of bears in the State of Nagaland in past and appealed the frontline staff to be in close contact with individuals and communities for protection of bears in particular and wildlife in general.  

Dr. Nishith Dharaiya, Co-chairman IUCN, Sloth Bear Expert Team and Associate Professor, Department of Life Science, HNG University, Patan, Gujarat, stated the function of different expert groups of endangered species identified by International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). He also gave background of this training workshop on bear conservation.  

Thomas, Wildlife SOS, USA, stated, in his address, need of conservation of different varieties of bears in North-Eastern Region. Heuneilung, Director, Intanki National Park proposed the vote of thanks.   This was stated in a press release issued by Satya Prakash Tripathi, Chief Wildlife Warden, Nagaland, Dimapur.
