DIMAPUR (MExN): Every year thousands of SC/ST aspirants swarm Delhi for seats in colleges across Delhi University (DU). According to information available with The Morung Express more than 5000 applicants from the reserved category had applied for various courses this year. Out of this more than 2000 students are reportedly still to get allotment of seats in the DU colleges. In a startling revelation, it was known that the students from the reserved sections are in a different ‘code of subjects’ for the new session 2005-06. It was stated from sources that the most sought after subject among the SC/ST was Geography this year, which had never been a popular subject for the SC/ST students until now. Further investigations revealed that Civil Services Examinations could have been one of the reasons DU aspirants opting for geography. Senior students from the northeast region told this correspondent that Geography subject besides having less competition in the UPSC examinations was also a high scoring option for students in the reserved category.

Further information revealed that the second most popular subject to top the chart was B.Com (honors) which was also another unpopular subject among the reserved category until now. However there was stiff competition for those aspiring to get into this course. Sri Ram Commerce College which is the top Commerce College in DU had completely stopped recruitment after the first cut-off list itself. Their cut-off rate was 93 % even for SC/ST candidates which many complained was too steep.

In another instance, it was disclosed that the cut-off percentage for the reserved quota is higher than the general category. As per reliable sources a certain college in DU had the first cut-off percentage of a subject for general at 65%, whereas, for the reserved category, it was 81.25 %.
