The All Tuensang Private School Association (ATPSA) organised a quartet singing competition in celebration of the golden jubilee of the Nagaland Board of School Education (NBSE) at St John's Higher Secondary School, Tuensang.
Twelve schools participated in the competition: St John’s Higher Secondary School, Government Higher Secondary School Tuensang, Government Higher Secondary School Thangjam, St Xavier's School Tuensang, Loyem Memorial High School Tuensang, Baptist Thangyen Higher Secondary School, Bethesda School, St Joseph's School, Akum Imlong School, Eklavya Model Residential School, Wela Foundation School, and Holy Angel's School.
Government Higher Secondary School Tuensang emerged as the winner, earning a cash prize of Rs 10,000 and certificates. The school will represent Tuensang district in the state-level quartet singing competition. Wela Foundation School secured second place, receiving Rs 7,000 and certificates, while Eklavya Model Residential School took third place with Rs 5,000 and certificates.
The competition was judged by Akhang Chang, Pastor Police Baptist Church 3rd NAP, Likhumla, Music Director of Sangtam Baptist Church Tuensang, and Liang, Music Director of Khiamniungan Baptist Church Tuensang.
‘Dream big’
Er Nabum Tombou, Assistant Mechanical Engineer (PWD), served as the guest of honour. In his speech, Er Nabum Tombou, an alumnus of St John's Higher Secondary School encouraged students to dream big, sharing his own experiences of overcoming challenges and achieving success, including passing the Nagaland Public Service Commission exams twice. He emphasided the importance of early determination and participation in competitions as preparation for future challenges.
Er Nabum urged schools to aim for quality education, focusing on holistic development that includes research, technology, skill development, and entrepreneurship. He highlighted the importance of addressing social issues such as mental health in the curriculum.
He also stressed the importance of reading, noting that many students and residents only seek out libraries during research periods. He challenged students to become the best versions of themselves, emphasizing the need to “be the best to compete with the rest.”
In his address, Er Nabum shared a story from his village where he encouraged school dropouts to continue their education under the Beti Bachao Beti Padhao initiative, although the girls were reluctant to resume their studies. He urged students to reflect on their dreams and work diligently to achieve them.
The programme was led by Tiajongla, Vice Principal of Wela Foundation School, with an invocation prayer by Roselin, Principal of Baptist Thangyen Higher Secondary School. Rev Father Shaji Matthew, President of the All Tuensang Private School Association, delivered the welcome address, and Debashish A. Deb, Treasurer of ATSPA, gave the vote of thanks.
