It is often painful to part with one's hair, especially if it is being nurturing for a long time. However, more than 30 people willingly give it up, for a cause today.

They donated hair bunch of 12 inches long or more during a charitable hair donation event “Hair for Hope India,” a first of its kind in the North-Eastern region at the Lighthouse Church, Dimapur.

The event also saw the launching of “Protect your Mom, Asia Campaign,” an initiative for breast cancer self-exam awareness under the same banner.

The donated hairs will be converted into wigs and donated to economically-challenged chemotherapy patients. Ahimsa Zhimomi, and Narola Longchari, both cancer survivors, were present at the event as guests.

Sharing her story, Ahimsa, who is also President and Founder of Cancer Support Group, said that as social worker and evangelists, she suffered the stigma and self-pity of considering herself unfortunate and cursed.

Her journey as a cancer survivor taught her the acceptance and faith she needed to inculcate through the miracle of healing.

Recalling her chemotherapy, Narola said that losing her hair was challenging and painful.

Women, mothers and young girls including a six years old girl and a young man donated their hair and also pledged for lifetime donation.

Alex Kikon, a young man of his 20s, who passionately loves growing long hair and the only man among them shared that he wanted to donate his hair for a cause.

Fascinated by the initiative shared on a Facebook page, he said: “I immediately got my hair cut in a salon, queried about the location and travelled more than 20 kms to donate my hair.”

Amen Jamir, the lady behind the drive said that losing her mother to cancer ignited her zeal to help cancer patients. “The Hair for Hope page which I came across on Facebook a few years back was the rightful place and drive to volunteer,” she added. Since then, she have donated her hair twice.

While only around 10 donors were expected, the huge response has encouraged Amen to continue organizing in the years to come.

“The donated hair will be directly sent to Hair for Hope, Bangalore for further processing,” Amen added. All donors were felicitated with certificate from Hair for Hope, India.
