A Google News Initiative (GNI)-DataLeads Training on the topic, "Fact Checking and Verification Tools for Journalists" was held at the Kohima Press Club Office (KPC) on October 23 with Dr Moalemba, GNI India Training Network Trainer as the Resource Speaker. The training was held with the objective of supporting journalists and media educators across India against misinformation.
Dr Moalemba highlighted about the conceptual definition of Misinformation, Disinformation and Mal-information that are usually generated with the distinct motivations of political, financial, psychological and social/religious reasons. He further dwelt on the various steps of visual investigations for still images, the first of which include keywords and looking for clues. The other steps he highlighted included reverse image searches such as google image, Yandex Reverse Search, Tineye Reverse Search, and Google lens.
He said the best tools for visual investigations for videos or moving images are InVID, YouTube Inbuilt tools, Anilyzer.com, and VLC Player. He also touched upon Data Journalism and Verification while highlighting that "developing a data frame of mind and being able to collect and question data in a disciplined way, making sense of discrepancies, and finding the underlying patterns and outliers that are important."
He said that poor handling of data can result in "accusations of bias and can compromise your work" while one can lose trust of their readers/audience and also result to lawsuit.
Also with journalists often having to sift through many files, he highlighted on the use of "Pinpoint" that automatically searches through a folder of documents and highlights people, organizations and location and can also filter documents by various criteria and transcribe audio files.
He further highlighted about "Wayback Machine" that allows the user to go back in time and see how a particular website looked in the past.
