‘Go beyond government jobs’ unemployed educated told

Dimapur, June 25 (MExN): A State-level Seminar under the theme ‘Educated Youth and Unemployment Problem in Nagaland’ held at St. Joseph’s College called upon the educated unemployed youths to go beyond the pursuit of white-collar jobs and the need for changing their professional preferences to alleviate the present unemployment problem plaguing the state of Nagaland. The seminar also stressed on the various repercussions that unemployment impacts while remedial measures to correct the system was also discussed.

The seminar organized by St Joseph's College and sponsored by the ICSSR, Shillong, was held June 24 at the college’s Auditorium. The resource persons were Rev. Fr. Dr. George P.Mathew, MSFS Principal, and Komol Singha, Economics Lecturer, St. Joseph’s College, while Rev. Fr. Mathew Keemattam, Vicar General, Diocese of Kohima was the moderator of the proceedings.

The first technical session was presented by Rev. Fr.Dr. George P.Mathew on the current situation of unemployment in Nagaland and the remedial measures needed to address the malady thereof.  Rev. Fr.Dr. George P.Mathew emphasized on the basic problems which causes unemployment among educated youths. According to him, the cause of youth unemployment is due to the preference for white-collar Jobs, neglecting other 'lower' jobs, "fearing loss of their status and loss of stability."  Moreover, due to lack of job opportunities which add ‘fuel to the fire’ causing more extreme repercussions, it was also stressed that violence and such anti-social activities are by-products of unemployment.  “So, the first step we can undertake is the establishment of peace and right motives, conduct job orientation courses for the youths and setting up industries and factories” he said.   Rev. Fr.Dr. George P.Mathew further reminded the youths that “Self-help is the best help” and is always advisable “to climb the ladder of success starting from the lowest state and go forward step by step.”

The second session was taken by St Joseph College’s Economics lecturer Komol Singha who stressed mainly on assessment of population growth and economic development in the state of Nagaland.  Lecturer Komol Singha said that the growth of population is not an issue provided it is accompanied by economic development and development of material-infustructure  well-being in the society.  The lecturer further emphasized that growth of population would be checked automatically by the evolving of a proper market mechanism.

The third technical session of the seminar was also taken up by Komol Singha. The Lecturer, stressing on quality education for solving the problem of unemployment amongst the educated youth population in Nagaland, emphasized on the need of a market-oriented education as well as for effecting a change in the present state of syllabus curriculum being followed in the Nagaland educational system today.

The seminar concluded with remarks from the moderator, Rev. Fr. Matthew Keemattam.  The moderator  justified the lectures given by the resource persons with his compliments.  The moderator added that economic development can be brought by providing well-equipped education in the society. Earlier in the seminar Rev. Fr. Thomas John had said the invocation which was followed by a welcome address by Sr. Annie, Vice Principal of the College.
