Gorkha Community celebrates ‘Pre-Tihar’ in Kohima

Kohima, November 12 (MExN): The Gorkha Community of Kohima, led by the Gorkha Public Panchayat Kohima (GPPK) in collaboration with Gorkha NGOs, Clubs, and Jatiya Sansthas, celebrated Pre-Tihar ‘2023 (Deepawali Milan) on November 11 at the Multi-Utility Hall, GPPK complex, Chandmari, Kohima.

Speaking on the occasion and extending Deepawali greetings, the special guest and Deputy Commissioner Kohima, Kumar Ramnikant, shared insights into the festival, which symbolises the victory of light over darkness.

He requested the gathering to illuminate the darkness in their hearts with forgiveness and love. 

Ramnikant also urged the community to draw inspiration from the positive contributions of Gorkha leaders, both past and present, emphasising the significant role of Gorkha settlers in the development of Kohima township and their enduring relationship with the local populace.

Expressing his joy towards the community's efforts in preserving their culture and traditions, he also stressed on the importance of passing them on to the next generation.

Ramnikant assured that the district administrative head of Kohima is available 24 x 7 in the service of all communities in the district.

According to a press release from GPPK, other highlights of the celebration included Tihar (Deepawali) greetings by Ranjeet Lama, Advisor GPPK; a dramatized act on Tihar celebration by members of Gorkha Bishwakarma Pariwarik Welfare Society Kohima (GBPWSK); cultural dances and songs, including special performances featuring legendary singer Kishore Kumar's songs by James Kikon from Lower Chandmari Kohima.

Jeny Lamechane Chettri and Yommi Rai served as the comperes of the event, while GPPK President Santu Thapa welcomed the gathering, and its General Secretary, Suresh Kr Lama, delivered the vote of thanks.
