Government to host World Environment Day 2018

States/UT asked to undertake actions for creating awareness on environmental conservation

Dimapur, May 30 (DIPR): The Ministry of Environment, Forest & Climate Change, Government of India (GoI) has informed through a notification that the GoI will be hosting the World Environment Day, 2018 in India on June 5 under the theme ‘Plastic Pollution.’  

Hosting the event is a step towards India’s commitment to taking on global leadership on addressing all forms of pollution, reducing emissions and investing in sustainable development efforts.  

Minister for Environment, Forest and Climate Change has already requested Chief Ministers of all States and Lt. Governors of all Union Territories to celebrate World Environment Day in a grand manner.  

The Ministry has urged the states/UT to undertake actions for creating awareness on environmental conservation and theme based awareness to 'Beat Plastic Pollution' by undertaking following suggested initiatives:

• Undertake awareness activities across all schools including-poster making, essay writing, quiz competitions etc.

• Plastic litter clean-up drives in cities and towns

• Illumination of office premises and other buildings with green lights on June 5, 2018

• Sensitization of general public through print and social media

• Making announcements towards curtailing use of plastic in all forms by Government agencies

• States/UT may go ahead with their own innovative ideas to beat plastic pollution and initiate activities with local resources till June 5, 2018.
