DIMAPUR, AUGUST 6 (MExN): In the backdrop of Jammu and Kashmir dramatically losing its special status within a day, the Government of India was today quick to reassure states designated with special powers under the Article 371 of the Constitution that the Modi government had no intention to remove the provision.

Nagaland State Governor, RN Ravi said that Article 371(A) is a “solemn commitment to the People of Nagaland. It is a sacred commitment.”

In a press release from the Raj Bhavan, the Governor stated that some people have expressed apprehensions over the implications of development in Jammu & Kashmir on Nagaland.

“I would like to categorically assure you all that you do not have to worry at all. We are earnestly working to happily conclude the ongoing political process which is at a very advanced stage,” he added.

Nagaland Chief Minister, Neiphiu Rio welcomed the Governor’s statement, adding that “it is taken as an assurance of the Government of India.” Rio further said it was encouraging to hear that talks are at an advanced stage and there is positive hope that the political negotiations will reach its logical conclusion through an honorable and acceptable solution.

The CM assured full support of the State Government as active facilitator and “will leave no stone unturned to work towards creation of a congenial atmosphere in order to facilitate the political solution.”

He further assured citizens that the State Government “will stand up for the rights and the protection of our people under all circumstances.” It meanwhile appealed to all sections of the people to unite “as one Naga voice under a spirit of unity and oneness, for it is only through unity that we can collectively face the challenges that lie ahead and together emerge successful.”

Home Minister, Amit Shah while speaking in the Lok Sabha today stated that the BJP government had no intention to remove Article 371. This was in response to opposition leaders including Manish Tewari and Shashi Tharoor questioning what message was being sent to these states with special status.

Most of the states that have been accorded special provisions under Article 371 are in the North East, with Article 371 A dealing particularly with Nagaland.

Congress, JDU oppose GoI’s move
The Nagaland Pradesh Congress Committee (NPCC) stated that it was not surprised at the removal of Article 370 and 35(a) as the BJP has “fulfilled the RSS’ principle of Uniform Civil Code.”

“This is nothing less than blatant exhibition of dictatorship. A society that has grown as a family for 72 years is now divided into two separate entities without their approval,” said a press release from the NPCC President, K Therie.

The NPCC further cautioned: “Tomorrow, Nagaland may be divided into two UTs and Article 371(A) scrapped.” “In the event, Congress whether weak or strong, will oppose,” it added.

The Nagaland State Unit of the JD (U) said it was shocked at the revocation of Article 370 “without any proper and rational discussion as a prelude to such a drastic action.”

“The JDU reiterates its stand and vehemently oppose the repeal of the Article and hereby convey its strong objection to the undergoing action,” the party said.

It meanwhile hoped that good sense would prevail even at this moment and the NDA will give time for reasoning.
