Govt MDM scheme to be monitored strictly

Dimapur, January 24 (MExN): The Department of Education has decided to strictly monitor the implementation of mid-day meal (MDM) scheme for government schools in the State. Unlike the past, school inspectors of the department will keep constant check and report to the Directorate on any irregularities found in the implementation of the scheme. The department will also keep photographic evidence of food grains provided to government schools.
Deputy Inspector of Schools (DIS), Dimapur, Khetoshe Yepthomi while addressing a community mobilization programme today said that from 2011, food grains issued by the department will go directly to the school’s storehouse. He warned against storing the food grains in private homes. For schools that do not have a storehouse, the DIS said the department will send a proposal to the government for construction. He said that photographs of buffer stock will be taken at regular intervals and its utilization closely monitored.
The DIS also urged the schools not to divert cooking costs and the yearly cooking honorarium for other purposes. On the utilization of food grains, he said that the MDM must be provided according to prescribed norms and not beyond that. The component of the scheme is to provide each child 100 grams of rice/wheat per school day. However, the DIS said the department has observed that most schools utilise one week’s stock in one day. He called for an end to that. Food like poultry and fish, not prescribed in the norms, should be avoided, he added.  The DIS further laid emphasis on hygienic food for children. He said that the school must ensure that the food is served hot and cooked properly.
The DIS further reminded teachers and others attending the programme about importance of education. He said the government has been giving utmost importance to education in the State. New innovations are being sought in the education policy by involving community leaders in department trainings, he added. Calling on all teachers to rededicate to their profession, the DIS also mentioned that stern action will be taken against teachers keeping proxy. He said the department has overlooked the problem for too long which has greatly affected the quality of education in the State. A fact finding report on the regularity of all staffs employed in government schools, and also the MDM scheme, will be tabled at the Directorate regularly, he said.
The three days community mobilization programme was attended by government appointed teachers, village education committee leaders and social welfare department’s angawadi workers. Kevi Leigise of SCERT gave an overview of the Right to Education Act, which is soon to be implemented in the state. An account of ‘out of school children’ was given by Freda of Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA).
