Sending out a strong message, at least in letter for now, to all anti-social elements operating within the state and Dimapur in particular, Deputy Commissioner of Dimapur Maongwati Aier today publicly warned all criminals that the government will ‘leave no stone unturned’ in nabbing them.
Addressing a rally at the City Tower junction against the backdrop of the recent kidnapping of an employee of the State Bank of India on April 27, the administration asserted strongly against anti-social elements and assured safety for all employees working in the banking sector. He further called for immediate stop to all sorts of collection drives and donations by various associations and unions in Dimapur.
Aier said that the moral fabric of the Naga society is deteriorating, and the failure of the society in handling and imbibing moral values in the younger generation is leading to intensified criminal activities. He urged the church and families to reform the society and work united to curb all unlawful activities.
The rally, organized by the Dimapur Bank Insurance Employees Coordination Committee witnessed the frustration and anguish of public sector employees who raised doubts about their safety. Notwithstanding the contributions of the banking sector in the growth of the state, a representative of the SBI spelled out the reason for their presence. He said, “We want all such people to know that we are not here for our own sake but for the uplift of the society and growth of the economy.” He pointed out that the kidnapping of the SBI employee has left fear psychosis in the minds of other people as well. The banker also reminded all anti-social forces and the public in general that continued harassment of the employees of public sector undertakings may prompt closure and withdrawal of offices from Nagaland. “This will ultimately affect the people,” he reminded and further requested the public’s help in rooting out social evils for progress to come.
President of the Naga Council Savi Liegsie addressed the rally extending support to all tribal bodies in seeking justice against perpetrators of unrest. He stressed on the need to assure the safety of people working in the banking and corporate sectors. “Nagaland is classified as a backward state. We cannot dream of a beautiful Nagaland if we harass the very people who contribute to the growth of our economy,” Savi said. He urged the people of Nagaland to create a congenial atmosphere of peace and goodwill where the banking sector can serve the people in joy and satisfaction.
Also, the president of the Naga Women Hoho of Dimapur in her speech said many criminals are working under the shadow of the multiple Naga armed factions.
“Crime is increasing because anti-social elements are networking with several Naga factions in Nagaland,” the president, Hukheli Wotsa said. She appealed to the public to stop blaming each other; rather, Wotsa said, everyone must work hand in hand to eradicate the prevalent evils from the society.
The rally was also supported by the Forum for Naga Reconciliation, Dimapur Naga Students Union, Dimapur GB/DB Forum and the Dimapur Chamber of Commerce, who pressed upon the public to be more vigilant and work together to eliminate all criminal activities. A memorandum was submitted by the Dimapur Bank and Insurance Employees Coordination Committee to the Deputy Commissioner for Dimapur. The memorandum demanded the arrest of the persons responsible for the April 27 kidnapping case. The committee has also sought increased security in and around all central government offices, PSUs and financial institutions.
