Coppices of pollarded stems from Alder trees harvested for firewood are seen neatly lined below the harvested trees at Khonoma village on January 5. Traditional alder based agroforestry system, considered an ecological farming practice is widely practiced among the Angami, Chakhesang, Chang and Yimchunger tribes of Nagaland. In this system of farming, crops are grown as inter-crops with Alder trees.
