Guidelines for Naga students seeking admissions

Many are still in the dark about our tribal students being duped in recent times when looking out for admissions to professional courses outside the state. With such incidents on the rise which usually go unreported, one must learn from the past and remain vigilant and alert. This write –up is to make aware to students and parents about wisely getting into an institute.
There are many ways to get into a college offering professional courses. The foremost and the most common one is through entrance exams. If students gets selected through entrance exams like JEE, AIEEE etc also, there are cases where some selected merit candidates forfeit their government quota and go privately as some colleges  are poorly managed with guest lecturers as faculty or the medium of instruction is mixed up with Hindi or other regional languages, poor hostel facilities and so on.
Every allotted college availed through government quota are recognized but that does not mean that every college is top or reputed one as students gets their institutes through merit basis. Hence some practical difficulties faced by students, so even if selected through entrance exams, students should make proper inquiries. One can also avail seats privately under management quota (direct admission) which comes with a price while there are some private institutions that admit students purely on merit basis through entrance exams only and do not have management quota.
Whenever there is education fest/fair, we encourage students and parents to attend and get exposure to different institutes but needs to be careful as education has become like a market and there are good and bad institutes and every institute will promote their college as top one and offers a number of courses. One must find out in which course an institutes tops the ranking place because some courses/branch may not be recognized or affiliated. To avail seats through these fairs, some institutes charge higher fees than getting it directly from the college counters.
This process of admissions outside the state have become a booming business for many not leaving behind some religious leaders, teachers, schools, coaching centres etc particularly in Dimapur and Kohima.  Many agents, institutes, trusts, corporate offices flows into Nagaland to conduct direct admission, spot admission, admission seminars/counseling , and open information centres to admit students in different institutes outside the state.
But students and parents need to be extra cautious with such kinds of activities as they bring some colleges without recognition, affiliations, proper facilities, hostels, campus, classrooms etc. In many cases these agents have not seen the institutes they represent and are usually the 3rd - 4th parties. They even claim that their corporate office or agencies are ISO certified and mention that their engineering/medical etc institutes are Nagaland government recognized or approved / some percentage of seats reserved for Nagaland state but good and top colleges do not provide such facilities. These are some areas where students can be cheated.
While interacting with some schools, the authorities have shown concern for creating awareness about such activities relating to admissions outside the state. It is a request to ANPSA to discourage such activities associating with the school without personal knowledge of the professional institutes. At the same time requesting the student’s bodies to check out the authenticity of so called trusts, agents, corporate offices, institutes etc from other states that are freely operating in Nagaland during admission season, so as to prevent tribal students from being duped.
In order to facilitate the tribal students to get admissions outside the state without hassles, India Northeast Tribal Community Welfare Society, registered under Societies Act, Government of Nagaland, in 2004, under the aegis of Libra Consultancy its educational wing, is making an earnest effort to uplift the tribal people and effectively spread awareness about admissions outside the state and by conducting free educational seminars for professional courses, career guidance programmes and educational surveys in schools and colleges.
Our Society is working for the benefit of the tribal and general student’s community in the entire northeast region. We have personally inspected many professional colleges and institutes outside the state and verified whether an institute is recognized by competent authorities, for instance, A Medical college by Medical Council of India (MCI) , Engineering colleges/B-Schools by All India Council of Technical Education (AICTE) etc.We also see the different facilities offered by the institutes like hostel, mess, libraries, labs, etc.
During such visits we identified many institutes offering quality education, good infrastructure, facilities while others lacks behind in many areas like faculties, libraries, labs, classrooms, basic infrastructure etc. Some institutes markets themselves by giving the blueprint or very standardized brochures but actual building and campus is totally different.

Some guidelines for students:
“Admission in the right institution is the first step towards career planning.”
1.    To get into new established professional colleges one must find out whether the college as well as the course is affiliated and recognized since there are cases where some professional colleges  within northeast  and outside the state facing affiliations, non- recognitions, fake status and different issues as students faces difficulty.
2.    Before getting into deemed university which offers different courses, students should be aware that 44 deemed universities are de-recognized by the government of India and the hearing of the case will be done in the month of May 2011 tentatively.
3.    For private MBBS aspirants, it is better to study in India than abroad for many matters.
4.    For Dental and Nursing courses, students should study in institutes with hospital attached only and recognized by DCI and INC.
5.    To be cautious of Spot admissions, attractive advertisements, discount rates for tribal girl students, guaranteed placements offers/handsome perks etc
