Has the Nagaland government taken decisive steps in addressing the Assam-Nagaland border issue?

Some of those who voted  YES had this to say:

  • Yes, at least they have taken the decision to post the IRB in the border area.
  • The state government has been quite mature in dealing with the border issue. If they had reacted like the Mariani MLA, there would have already been a lot of bloodshed.

Some of those who voted NO  had this to say:

  • No, am wondering whether people in authority are aware of the existence of "Assam- Nagaland" border issues.
  • No, the government of Nagaland is not serious at all. Even during the meetings between the governments on the border issue, the Assam government comes all prepared with all the documents, whereas our Nagaland government goes to attend these meetings with no documents at all, in a free style manner. Most historians will say that the land belongs to the Naga people, but the court system goes on the basis of documents and the burden of proof lies on the government. Sad to say but our Nagaland government does not seem to be doing a good job.
  • CM has not visited the place still and not even one of the MLA from MKG district. Where else Assam CM was already there in the place.
  • NO. We should all support the Ao's by personally contributing to built the foothill roads. Every right thinking Nagas should do it, it's time to fight against the illegal immigrants and nomadic tribes in border areas who thinks they can do whatever they want with the Nagas.
  • No, Our government just sleeping with a deaf ears
  • No. Instead of appointing commissions to oversee the affairs who by the way hold only meetings after the trouble had already taken place, should take a stronger stance by actually establishing NAP posts to take care of our borders. I strain my ears still i can hear nothin.. not even a single sigh for what recently happened near Mkg.
  • No, Since its happening again and again…
  • A big NO.....i dnt knw what is the reason behind their silence towards the issues but the govt seems more concerned with festivals than with the needs of the people......their attitude seems as if they have some ill feelings towards some group of people.
  • No. For Nagaland government there is no border and hence the issue doesn’t get sincere attention. I wish a new government with new faces and better vision is installed. The present government has become visionless.
  • Big No......instead busy buying luxurious car without noticing the suffering in border issue.
  • No, The Nagaland government does not seem interested at all in resolving the border issues. They fail to realize that by ignoring the problem, soon the land of the Nagas will be further encroached by outsiders till Naga people lose their lands completely.
  • i dnt think so nagaland govt can do.....(NO).
  • No. Because there have been no long term strategic policies to give Nagaland an edge on the disputed border. We have seen Assam over the past decades slowly develop the borders and deploy their armed police on the pretext of combating insurgency. They have even encouraged or retrenched immigrants on the disputed areas. We have to understand that the undeveloped areas will be the bone of contention. The only thing the govt. has done is to give a knee jerk reaction whenever there is some sort of border problems. It is no longer about the outcome of a court case. Whatever decisions are made by a commission or a court will be based on ground realities...and Nagaland has done nothing on the ground.
  • No, Nagaland govt is really not paying attention to the border issue. I think our Nagaland govt is on their way from MANIPUR right now…
  • No. As far as decisive actions are concerned in regard to border issues, our govt simply act to save face and that too, only after the crisis is long gone. The farthest that the govt provide is some sort of monetary compensation for emergencies, appoint a commission to probe who always vanish into thin air and of course, deploy some truckloads of armed personnels who only know how to hide from those disputes... It's time we execute binding actions along our borders and station govt administration, health & relief centres, armed troops, etc. permanently.
  • NO, I think they don’t want to acknowledge border issue along Mon-Wokha-Mokokchung because their hands are full with issues from Manipur. Moreover a politician has to look after the well being of his family across the border too.
  • No, Nagaland government’s priority is Festivals and Celebrations since it is a fun loving government. Since dealing with border issues is not fun it has maintained distance from Nagaland-Assam border issue. When will Nagaland government learn to do what NEEDS to be done than what it WANTS to do for fun?

Some of those who voted OTHERS had this to say:

  • Conflict Resolution is not our strong suit.
  • Forget Kohima-Dimapur highway for now and divert the money for construction of foothill road on war footings.
  • What should be done then. In my opinion
        1. set-up multiple NAP outpost, with proper accommodation.
        2. appoint boarder magistrate
        3. electric connectivity in all boarder villages and sub colonies.
        4. ring well and or submerged pump for addressing the water problem
        5. road construction and or proper maintenance of the existing one
        6. medical (PHC) unit as well as proper health center (gov) must function effectively.
        7. educational institution.
Every village may want it but the state government must take it up on priority basis as it is much neeeeeeded in the boarder areas.
  • We need to reclaim all the Naga lands according to the Original British Map of Naga Hills.
  • We need to have select elders from every fields and tribes forming a think tank group. They should guide us on how to handle the present situation and also formulate long term policies to protect our borders. Its not with brawn but with brains that is going to win us this war. As for our state govt. the only thing we can tell them is "Stop playing government".
  • Armies have never won wars and so there needs to be good strategies in terms of what needs to be done. To begin with, the GoN should first of all, try and get hold of the 'lost' map if it is available in archives in Britain or elsewhere. Then there needs to be a white paper on the issue and the challenges so far. For example, unless sensitive, the paper needs to address issues like - what has been or what ails the discussions with GoA so far and therefore, how can it be addressed. What or how does the GoN envisage the role of local institutions and the public at large? Problem is the public often do not know what is happening at the government negotiations and discussions and therefore not only not know what to do but could even be jeopardizing the game plan.
  • Sooner or later this issue is going to get out of hand, so before this happens, it'll be better for the govt to solve this issue and bring this hot issue to rest. This kind of issue should not be kept in the side for long, it should have been solved long back then.
  • Prepare for war, polish those 303 and buy uniform for fatty and old NAP.
  • The problem is with us actually.. we call those border settlers as land grabbers, land mongers and what not.. be truth known then we should actually be grateful to them for they are reclaiming our lost ancestral lands.. I believe it is because of these attitudes of ourselves that the Govt. is silent on these issues. We need to change our attitudes first. We can begin by pressurizing our 'beloved' Govt.
  • North Eastern States are tied together. We are sisters. Our umbilical cords are inter-connected. There must pro-active economic development. Governmental agencies partnering to develop strategies to safe guard borders and resources. Violence is not the answer, it only stifles economy and hyper price fixing on necessary items. It gains nothing but acrimonious saber rattlings. Angry exchange of threats does not resolve but becomes defensive fight at any cost. Even MKG district must have a great relationships with the people in Mariane and Amguri (spe?) at the highest level because we will always be together. Our dependency on each other is so great.
  • Why is it that we are the only one who keep speaking about peace? Has anyone seen any such words from beyond the border? Instead i see so many nonsense kinds of news being poured out everyday by those uncivilised bunch hiding in those tea garden against the Nagas. I've never heard anyone of them acknowledging their fault... Instead they go on and on saying the land belongs to them, what do you suppose this is? Were we wrong to protect our land? What if it was some NAGA who got killed in the fire which was started by those adivasis and assam police? Will the assam govt try to catch the culprit/murderer?
