HC directs Mkg DC to ensure free & fair polls in Angetyongpang A/C

DIMAPUR, FEBRUARY 2 (MExN): The Kohima Bench of the Gauhati High Court today passed a judgment stating that a “very disturbing fact” has come to the notice of the Court regarding the “open indulgence in politics by the Riongsanger Putu Menden of Mongsenyimti village by supporting once particular candidate and debarring other citizens of Mongsenyimti village to contest from 24 Angetyongpang A/C.”

This was observed with regard to a writ petition filed by S Maongkaba Ozukum stating that he was “debarred from contesting in the general election to the 14th Nagaland Legislative Assembly by the Mongsenyimti Riongsanger Putu Menden/Village council.”

“The action of the respondent No 4 (Riongsanger Putu Menden) of Mongsenyimti Village is not permissible in law,” the Court observed. It directed the Deputy Commissioner of Mokokchung to take appropriate steps against the Riongsanger Putu Menden of Mongsenyimti Village in accordance with law. It further ordered the Mokokchung DC to file the action taken report before the Registry of this Court within a period of three weeks from the date of receipt of a copy of this order. Failure to do so, Registry is directed to initiate suo moto contempt proceedings against the official respondents, the Court said.

The DC was also directed to ensure that free and fair election is held in the forthcoming General Election to the 14th Nagaland Legislative Assembly in all the constituencies under Mokokchung district, particularly with regard to the 24- Angetyongpang Assembly Constituency.
