Kohima, August 24 (MExN): Nagaland is likely to experience cloudy heavy rainfall in almost all districts until 29 August, forecasted the Nagaland State Disaster Management Authority (NSDMA) in a weather update on 24 August.
These showers may be accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning in isolated places, it added.
Heavy rain is expected particularly in the districts of Chümoukedima, Kohima, Longleng, Mokokchung, Mon, Niuland, Peren, and Wokha, the NSDMA updated. The other districts may experience cloudy, moderate rain.
Nagaland's lowland and foothill regions, including Dimapur, Niuland, Chümoukedima, Bhandari, Pangti, Tizit, and Tuli, are vulnerable to waterlogging and flash floods due to the potential for high precipitation in the hill sector, it warned.
In view of the forecast, the NSDMA called for necessary precautionary measures and urged caution against lightning strikes and gale winds, which may cause disruption to communication and connectivity.
It further requested all District Disaster Management Authorities and other line departments to be on alert to save lives and property during this monsoon period.
The NSDMA also stated that some district headquarters, including Kohima and other blocks, may be cut off due to landslides caused by higher volumes of precipitation. Hence, key line departments responsible for the maintenance of public infrastructure may need to remain vigilant, it added.
