‘HEPATITIS CAN’T WAIT’: Nagaland observes World Hepatitis Day 2021

Dimapur, July 28 (MExN): “To raise awareness of viral hepatitis, an inflammation of the liver that causes severe liver disease and hepatocellular cancer,” World Hepatitis Day is observed each year on July 28. 

This year, the World Health Organisation chose the theme ‘Hepatitis can’t wait’, “conveying the urgency of efforts needed to eliminate hepatitis as a public health threat by 2030. With a person dying every 30 seconds from hepatitis related illness – even in the current COVID-19 crisis – we can’t wait to act on viral hepatitis.”

In Nagaland, the respective districts organized programmes under the Chief Medical Officer office to mark the day.

Dimapur: All Health & Wellness Centers under Dimapur district observed the day by conducting awareness on viral hepatitis to the stakeholders and communities such as village authorities, mothers’ association, church leaders, and youth leaders. The participants were oriented on types of Hepatitis, mode of transmissions, symptoms, diagnosis and treatment.

The participants were also screened on Non-Communicable diseases (NCD) and COVID-19 vaccinations were also carried out.

Longleng: The District Health Society, Longleng commemorated the day at CMO conference hall. Chief Medical Officer, Dr Obangjungla spoke on the importance and significance of why viral Hepatitis day is being observed worldwide. 

She encouraged all the pregnant women to come forward and get tested for Hepatitis, citing that if they are tested positive for Hepatitis, they can prevent the transmission to their child by administering the birth dose. 

The programme was chaired by Lipom, Vaccinator District Hospital, Invocation prayer by Tialemba Executive Secretary PBCA, and welcome address by Dr Limasungla, Epidemiologist. 

Others who attended the programme were Dr Kibang, Medical Superintendent District Hospital, Dr Imnameren Phom DPO (RCH/UIP), representatives from Phomla Hoichem, Phom Student’s Conference and staffs from CMO office. 

Mokokchung: During a programme held at CMO Conference Hall, Mokokchung, Dr R Alemba Jamir Medicine Specialist, IMDH as a resource person stated that Hepatitis is a viral disease which affects the liver. While addressing on Covid-19, Dr Temsuyanger ZLO and NMHP stressed on following the SOPs and guidelines, early testing and treatment and importance of Vaccination. 

The programme was chaired by Olemienla FWA and vote of thanks was said by Alimayang, Computor and it was attended by representatives from AKM, NSRLM, NHM, IEC personnel and CMO staff. 

Phek: Addressing the function held at Dr Wetshelo T Mero Memorial Hall, District Hospital, Phek, Dr Khriezotuo Paphino, CMO Phek delivered the keynote address. The types of Hepatitis, signs & symptoms, preventive measures, mode of transmission and treatments were deliberated by Dr Pangertemsu, Gynaecologist DH Phek. He also informed that treatment for Hepatitis- B is available at DH Phek.

The gatherings were also been briefed on the Covid-19 testing & treatment, status of Covid-19 vaccination etc. by Dr Wemeri, Sr MO DH Phek and Dr Kolhitso Khalo, DPO RCH & UIP Phek.

The programme were attended by SP Phek, Officials from Commandant 5th NAP, EAC Phek sadar, Colony Chairmen Phek Town, DPO & staff of DAPCU, staff of DH & CMO Phek. Lodino, nursing incharge DH Phek said invocation prayer while Dr Seyiekhrietuo Rutsa, Paedetrician DH Phek chaired the programme.

Zunheboto: District Health Society, Zunheboto observed World Hepatitis Day at CMO Office. Dr K Akaho Sema, Dy CMO, Zunheboto speaking on importance of the day stated that World Hepatitis Day is an opportunity for us to increase awareness and encourage a real political change to jointly facilitate prevention, diagnosis and treatment. Dr J Hokugha, DVBO/DSO gave the welcome address. Dr Aron, DTO cum DPO (RCH & UIP) chaired the programme and Vitoli, DPM gave vote of thanks. The programme was attended by Medical Officer's, Physiotherapist, Psychiatrists, BPM's, Counsellors and ASHA Coordinators.
