Dimapur, June 2 (MExN): Doctors at the Faith Hospital in Dimapur created history of sort in Nagaland with the delivery of the first Test Tube baby (IVF) by a woman at the hospital here today. And the mother has dedicated the baby boy to God by naming him as ‘Hikhulu’ which in Sumi means, ‘I asked from God and the Lord gave me’.
The baby which weighs 2.5 kilograms, according to doctors in the Hospital, is a very healthy and normal baby. The jubilated mother, Akheli Zhimomi 39, is also doing well and already planning on how bring up the child with her husband, Vikheshe Zhimomi. According to Dr Shikato, the man behind the successful delivery of the IVF baby, said that the delivery of the baby through Caesarean section took less than twenty minutes.
Dr Shikato said that the parents of the baby were married and remained childless for the past 18 years. He said that the couple, who had traveled to many places like Guwahati searching for a way to beget children, came to Faith Hospital in December 2005, where the doctors advised them to go for ICSI (Intra Cytoplasmic Sperm Injection)/Test Tube Baby to which the couple agreed. And so the first Test Tube baby was delivered in Nagaland, a dream come true for many a childless couple in the state, said Dr Shikato.
Akheli Zhimomi disclosed that she and her husband would dedicate the child to God since their prayers were finally answered by God. She also disclosed that she has thought about the name of the baby as ‘Hikhulu’ as she prayed God for the baby before the operation.
Dr Shikato said that he is the one who came up with the idea to bring in the technology for the IVF facility, and added that it is foreign made which one can find only in big cities like Mumbai and Delhi. He also disclosed that he has close contacts with other doctors from foreign hospitals like Keil University Hospital in Germany, King George Hospital in Sydney, Austraila and Indian doctors like Dr Ranjit Joshi from Nasik, who helps in consulting and advising patients and on medical know-how.
When asked how expensive the whole process of the IVF is, Dr Shikato declined to give a direct answer; however, he firmly and positively asserted that the cost of the IVF at the hospital, starting from the consultation to the delivery of the baby, is less than the half price of hospitals in other places.
In this regard, Dr Shikato said that his vision in bringing in the expensive technology, was not to make money but to help the ‘biologically handicapped’ and couples who are childless. He said that childless couples are the neglected group in the society, and so he decided to help them.
The successful delivery of the first Test Tube baby in the state, a hope to many childless couples in the state.The hospital can be approached for treatment and help. Dr Shikato said that there are many pregnant mothers waiting to deliver their babies, with one even having twins in her womb.
