‘HIV/AIDS is a socio economic factor’

Dimapur, February 4 (MExN): A one day advocacy campaign on HIV/AIDS was held at the community Hall, Sungro on February 3. 

A press note issued by the CYSA Wokha said that the meeting was addressed by Ralanthung Yanthan, DY Speaker, NLA, Kohima. He maintained that substance abuse like alcoholism and drug abuse leads to risk behavior. He said that HIV/AIDS is a global issue. “Earlier we only heard about HIV/AIDS but now it has entered our homes.” He also said that HIV/AIDS is a socio economic factor affecting generation issue. He emphasized on the importance of Harm Reduction Education and safer practices. He said that the best prevention method is reading the word of God daily and living according to it. He also urged upon the delegates to advocate voluntary blood test and to visit the ICTC Centers to learn from the counselors on voluntary blood donation and clarify the misconceptions. He further appealed for co-operation and participation to effectively implement the various schemes and programmes carried out through different agencies.

The meeting was organized by Centre for Youth and Social Action (CYSA), Wokha and sponsored by LFA, Nagaland. The programme was attended by more than 200 delegates. The delegates were Village Councils, VDB, Church Leaders, women Leaders, Ngos, students and govt. officials. Other dignitaries present in the meeting were R. Jami, IAS, Secretary Food and Civil Supplies, Dr. M. Kithan, CMO, Wokha, Albert Ezung, SDO Civil, Wokha, Shahin Shan, EAC, Sungro, A. Kithan, General Secretary, NPF, Kohima and Dr. Motsuthung Patton, ZLO, Wokha. Dr. Vinito L. Chishi, State Co-ordinator, LFA, Kohima highlighted the activities and commitment of LFA and encouraged the delegates to adopt people friendly policies and strategies to prevent HIV/AIDS in Sungro area. Chichamo Shitiri, Counselor, ITC, PHC, Sungro spoke on the basic information on HIV/AIDS and STD, HIV/AIDS scenario and facility available in Wokha District.
